Is monogamy natural?

I had a conversation with someone earlier and we glossed over this topic. Neither of us feel it's a natural thing for humans to be monogamous (I'm talkin for a lifetime here, not a week ;) ).

What do y'all think?

I know of a couple of scientific studies that back up my position, but I'm not posting them now.

The real question is what are you thinking?

What have you got on your wicked little mind?

What are you planning to get up to? :p

Wicked eh? I like that. :D I think the real question though, is what can I get YOU 'up' to?

oh tough one..

I want to believe that it's possible to be monogamous.. but I don't know if it is or not..

Hell I'm married.. and I'm very much attracted to someone else..

Not sure how I'd act on them if given the chance, but I know I have feelings for someone other than my husband..

I love my husband.. but sometimes I'm bored with the "norm" of our relationship..

wow.. said way more than I should..

ok.. leaving this thread

BOTH WASN'T AN OPTION!!!! Why does there always have to be someone who wants to pick an option that wasn't there??? It's a yes or no question! I gave you 5 choices, and you still want more????

The question isn't one of possibility though, but whether or not it's natural for us as a species. I know it's possible. I've been married for 7 years and managed to remain monogamous... my mom's been married for 20 (?) and wouldn't dream of cheating. But are we fighting instinct here?

Freudian slip?

I'm blonde.. don't ask me such deep questions.. ;)

I've never thought it was natural.. but I have no idea what the correct answer is.

I don't think anyone knows..

Monogamy is natural for a woman, but unnatural for a man.

That's why we have the Battle of the Sexes!:D

Smallpox is natural. So is cancer.

We may be biologically geared towards multiple mates. We are also biologically prepped to rape, steal, and murder. I'm not saying that polygamy is akin to any of those things - far from it. I am saying that often our hormones and instincts want to take us places where our minds and hearts may not want to go.

It isn't a matter of true nature, but that of what environment and circumstances call for in variation toward what is acceptable.

This is an interesting topic, though and through my Sociological, Anthropological and human Biological studies I am initially of the belief that up until the onslaught of a decent sized (now overdone)population on Earth, that the answer was no, it wouldn't be natural for humans to remain monogamous.

The reason was that due to the nature of the human capability to only bear one child at a time, for the most part, in a naturally concieved pregnancy, men developed the drive to expand their families because of the need. The Earth was big, and humans were few, and there is strength in numbers.

But that it is the will of humans to work in their best interest, and it seems that the ways of monogamy have more benifits in a balanced or an overpopulated world, and that we must slow down procreation for the sake of environmental space.

These drives are turned on and off in us based on circumstance and environment.

HUMANS DO NOT HAVE INSTINCTS. This is an unarugeable fact.
There is no one set behavior expected when a given environmental circumstance arises, that will be the result for every member of this species. Therefor we have drives, or things that motivate us to do something.

That is why monogamy is more prevailant in large societies with a balanced sex population.

So yes, it is natural... in certain situations.

If you were to go to an isolated island, uninfluenced by outside means, inhabited by 20% women, and 80% men, then the women would have mulitple partners.

If you were to go to an isolated island, uninfluenced by outside means, inhabited by 20% men, and 80% women, then the men would have mulitple partners.

That is how humans deal with a lack of balance.

Those who have the drive to fuck everything that moves, or be in many relationships, isn't doing it because of nature. They are just horny and lack self control. :D
