while under the influence of a number of bottles of becks finest brew , we were discussing which series of startrek was the best .
general concensus was that picard was the best captain [marginally beating kirk]
we also discussed who each alien race was based on.
humans being the u.s , romulans based on the germans and a disagreement as to whether the klingons were based on the japanese samaurai [possibly earlier on] or the vikings [violent , drinking songs etc]
i thought that in ds 9 worf was becoming more of an african , certainly showing characteristics more in line with the great zulu warriors . like shaka
then a female friend made the statement that janeway must be a lesbian and there was definitely a lesbian conotation underlying her relationship with 7 of 9 . the men had never noticed this , i wonder ?

What about the Ferengi? Allways after money. Profit before anything else.

Definetly North American.

vulcans are swiss
and our dear little ferengi friends are most definitely pakistani market traders

Vulcans are the French. Never fight, avoid conflight and no one likes them.

I have it on good authority that the Klingons were supposed to be Arabs and the Vulcans were supposed to be Jews.

Oh my God! I just posted on the internet about Star Trek.....I'm going to bed real real soon..........

klingons cant be arabs, arabs dont drink,
vulcans cant be french , vulcans have no passion
i can see some cossack in the klingons though , russians and americans arch enemies ? hmmmm
i could see the cardassians and the marquis being the arab israeli conflict

The original aliens of Star Trek weren't based on different cultures but on different parts of the human psyche. The Vulcans were the rational, logical brain and the Klingons were the animalistic impulses.

SO the aliens are really our brains seperated?

Oh, and Janeway was married when the series began - to a man - and she has never shown any sexual interest in females. Seven of Nine was, in many ways, pre-sexual at the beginning of her character development; while she did try to have sex with Ensign Kim it was rather obvious that she was not acting out of any emotional connection or physical desire but efficiently acting as a human ought to, in her mind, act. Later character development gave a decidedly heterosexual slant to her sexuality, though in one episode she was possessed by the memories and personality of a male klingon and proceeded to try and mate with B'Lonna.

Klingons and Vulcans were.. I don't know what inspired some of the later aliens but I don't believe they're based on any ethnic stereotype as much as they are caricatures of certain human characteristic or based on the needs of a certain episode's plot. Of instance, species 4872 (?) was created because the writers of Voyager wanted a scary enemy that could beat the Borg.

does that mean there have never been any married lesbians?
i have always looked upon the janeway 7 of 9 relationship as more of a parent /child relationship.

Janeway a lesbian???

No, I always saw her as more of a "penis hating feminist" myself.

A woman in command. She can order me anyday. *drools*

I dont think she was married. I think she was dating him.

No where in the Star Trek series has it been said or implied that there were same-sex marriages.. and, Janeway was married to a man. He appeared in the first episode.

Correction: I believe that Janeway was engaged to be married.

I remmebr the first episode. I thought he was a BF.
To bad they ended it they way they did. I wonder what would have happened when they hooked up again.

I guess we have to wait for the novel.

That, never, I believe is the only thing Star Trek has yet to fully tackle. Homosexuality.

If you really look at it, they never dipped into it to far, just barely thier big toe.

Rumors were floating around the net before the new series started, that they would have a gay character. I think it would be nice, and add an interesting twist to the whole Star Trek universe.

Just some random thoughts from a fellow Trekkie. :D

Their target audience has allways been younger males so I guess they dont want to do anything to freak the out.

Gene Rodenbury said that he would include a gay character in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but that panned out. At the moment, there are rumors of Lt. Malcolm Reed being gay.

Something I have never thought of as such, but Star Trek has always been into the differnt things. I think that the general enviroment that each series has been set in does not allow the writers to explore a true homosexual character. Flings yes, a full on Lesbian/Gay relationship... no.

Wouldn't it be interesting though? I mean come on. Someone on that ship has to be homosexual. In space for that long? They could explore that bit of our society. It really wouldnt be that hard for them to do.

Data was close...

and I know I should know this but Gordie? (Blind black guy in TNG)

Just because Worff and Jax got it on doesnt mean we need Trek to go gay so to speak.

It is after all still supposed to be sci-fi

I'm not sayin they should go gay, I'm just stating that it would be interesting to see is all.

Like I said, random thoughts from a fellow trekkie. :D

I'm just interested in the whole idea

So who from the new series (Given that I wont see it and all) is the one that should be the one?
