I've always thought of it as more like "Kill the Man with the Ball" (aka "Smear the Queer") that we played as children...just with a touch more/better organization to things...

Oh, and with spectators and payrolls and all the other corporate things that come with modern professional sports...

Rugby is a sensible, organised game, based on the principle of creating space through intelligent movement and passing. There is less random violence than in Yank Football (where you can hit anyone with a straight arm to the neck, whether they have the ball or not). Tackles are made only on the player who has the ball and below the shoulders. Arms must be wrapped around - no shoulder charges.

It's not disorganised violence! It is a game for the discerning, people who are willing to take time to understand the complexities. No wonder we English are world champions.
