"India alert as nuclear war looms

Luke Harding in New Delhi, and Richard Norton-Taylor
Saturday June 1, 2002
The Guardian

Diplomatic sources insisted that such a doomsday scenario was "very real". Neither the Indian nor Pakistani government had grasped the seriousness of the situation and the leaders of both countries would find it very difficult for domestic political reasons to back down, the sources said...

...Diplomatic sources said last night that, unlike the sides in the cold war, India and Pakistan did not appreciate the dangers of a conflict escalating into a nuclear exchange and their leaders had no experience of personal "hotline" communications."

It makes you wonder on which planet both of these countries have been living for the past 60 years.

"Haven't grasped..." and "did not appreciate..." proves to me that the leaders of both countries must be incredibly blind to what's been going on in the world or are retarded to the point where the rest of us must suspend all belief in them.

The rest of us can "grasp" and "appreciate".

Why can't they?

Third world or third rate?

Someone explain to me why India and Pakistan engaging in nuclear war would be a bad thing?

Because thousands upon thousands of innocent children would die, and more would suffer the rest of their lifes with radiation sickness.

That would be 'bad'.

Work with me here. Big bang? Got that bit? OK, lotsa dead people? Following me? Sure, they seem to deserve to wipe each other out, but here's the kicker, are you ready for this bit? Global fall out? Does the light of a nuclaer winter begin to shine through, or did you leave your brain in your colostomy bag?

Oh, c'mon. You're talking about a few dinky little nuclear devices. We're not talking about global thermonuclear war. It wouldn't result in anything worse than what we saw in the prime time of nuclear testing in 60s and70s. The yields would probably be far less if you want the truth.

And don't give me any crap about innocent people dying... Innocent people die by the thousands everyday. If they didn't the world would be overrun with innocent people.... Oh, wait, it already is.

I honestly don't think that a nuclear war on the Subcontinent would change in anyway how my daily routine goes. So why should I care?

question please?

Is not China friendly with one of these countries( it is sad that i don't know which one.) and what are they going to do if atomic war heads start going off in their part of the world?

suppose one of the damn things lands in China?

kittens in both countries would die.

when a kitty dies, Laurel cries.

don't make Laurel cry.

Ahhh, an American. America, that part of earth that is somehow detached from the rest of the globe and inviolate.

That's what most of Europe thought too, then they watched as Hitler rolled over all of Europe with his Blitzkrieg.

Global issues are important to us all, even if they don't seem to effect our daily lives.

Ok... So China, India and Pakistan have a little nuclear war.

Now I can understand why it would be bad if China was involved... The make billions of little things really cheap that no god-fearing American Union laborer would ever lower himself to produce for less than $18.93 and hour and 12 paid holidays. I'd hate for the price of things at the Dollar Store to go up to like $7.50 or something cause we gotta have Unionized American laborers making sporks. That part I understand.

But India and Pakistan? If they do it during this silly World Cup thing I don't think anyone outside the fallout zone would even notice.

Why is nuclear war bad???? Lets try innocent victims. It is immoral and unethical to subject innocence to such horrors because two governments can't sit down and talk rationally to each other. <IMHO>

You're mixing your metaphors now. This has nothing to do with Hitler. Hitler was unchecked aggression and the reason (other than oil) that we had to kick Saddam Hussein's ass. This is completely different.

This is like Argentina and Brazil... No one even knows they had little border skirmishes. Or like Greece and Turkey.

This a regional conflict and with the end of the Cold War the whole global thingy just doesn't cut it.

I know the USA first started using nukes and at the time it the peope in charge for many reasons thought it was the thing to do, however i don't think the USA or any other country with any sense wants to start using atomic weapons in what one would call normal wars

Governments find 1000s of ways everyday to screw the innocent. Personally, I think for many of these people a quick death would be much more pleasant than the slow wasteful passing of their lives they live with now.

And really, after the glut of Reality TV, who is left that is moral or ethical?

None of this would have happened if you didn't lose the Empire, so it's all your fault.....

I know what's going on here.

Hey p_pman, Third world and third rate. Ive thought about this a little and have come to the conclusion that theres nothing I can do, so why worry about it.If what Ive read is correct it seems our Muslim friends are stirring shit in Kashmir, hell, they hate the Hindus and Buddists more than they hate the Christians and the Jews, If thats possible. Maybe yayati can explain it all.

So nobody really worries because...

no nuclear devestation is going to happen on American soil.

Well I suppose that's one way of looking at it.

Doesn't increase your popularity with the rest of us though...

Isn't it true that the former leader of the free world, now the anus of the EU, drew all the borders of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan?

What are we supposed to do? Protest in the street? Write our Congressmen? Of course I care, but theres nothing You or I or anyone can do about it. If it happens it happens. Life will go on, except for the innocents who are killed because their governments cannot control their insurgents. And in this situation I place the blame on Pakistan and those peaceful Muslims.

China is a little more friendly historicaly with Pakistan then India.

We are much more friendly with Pakistan then with India since India tended to side with the old USSR during the cold war.

Juspar that guy was not just an American he was a conservative, not ignorant, American since in my definition they are the ones that usually don't give a shit about what happens in the world community.

"You can say anything you want. Unfortunately that means that trolls and jerks get to say what they want, too. This place is pretty anti-censorship, so that means we get to enjoy a wild amount of verbal freedom."

Case in point.

At the Korean war memorial in D.C. are the words "Freedom is not free". There is a price to be paid for all such freedoms and this is one example. Let Jack and his bowels ramble on. No one will change his mind because one can only hold constuctive conversation with those who are open. But I will ask one thing. I wonder how his position would be influenced by the inevitable introduction of US forces to such a conflict? Then again, I suppose not much until his personal comforts were directly threatened.

What a waste to those who died so one such as him could be free to not realise the cost.

Just wanted it to be clear who this came from. Besides, it bears repeating.
