When I came to Lit I was EXTREMELY intimidated by the "serious" forums. Everybody had so many posts, and seemed to know everybody else so intimately! I started posting on one of the forums less busy than the general board but full of enough low posters that it seemed to be okay for me to put in some ideas without getting too intimidated.

I lurked at the BDSM forum for YEARS before I felt like I'd "earned" the experience that would make me a part of the group. I totally understand the people lurking here being intimidated by how friendly everyone is to each other, and how often people get flamed. In everybody's defense, the ones getting flamed are usually MORONS. I think the smarter people are the ones who're hiding and reading and waiting, and that's why only the stupid questions get asked out loud.
