I had to use this word today and its usage always confuses me (no jokes please;) ).
Which is correct in each sentence?

Tom threw the ball further/farther than Bob.

Once Tom's ball landed it was further/farther by six inches.

If Tom wants to throw his balls all over the place let him I like to leave mine dangling right where mother nature intended them to be.

So of course tom threw his balls further, and of course they landed farther than mine cause mine never left me.

And having a male interested in how far I can throw my balls kinda scares me.

Yep, I think Bobtoad has that right on all accounts.

What BT said.....right on the money....

Tsk, tsk...

Three pieces of advice for you: Never eat at a place called Mom's, never play cards with a man named Doc and never take grammatical advice from Bobtoad.

It's farther on both counts. Farther indicates a measurable distance; further indicates immeasurable or intangible distance.

Well the fact that Tom would be throwing his balls further than mine is rather immeasureable and intangable as a distance because I would not be throwing mine around. Its just plain foolish and painful for me to be thinking of throwing my balls around.

By your own indicators wouldn't Bobtoad be correct, as the first of tony_gam's examples does not include a distance.

I would have used the same (nearly exactly word for word) explanation that you did. However, I will say that I would have said further for the first, as it has no stated or surmised distance.

I am wondering now which is correct? Ma'am!

EZ

Ps. Damn this means I agree with the way Bobtoad constructs the language. (Joke BT honest).

Remedial Grammar

Haven't you learned not to argue with an English teacher, boys?

There may not be a distance stated, Ezzy, but the act of throwing a ball is a physical one and the distance it is thrown is finite and therefore measurable. It doesn't matter if it is one inch or one mile, it's still measurable, therefore "farther" is appropriate.

And Bobtoad, put on the dunce cap and go sit in the corner...and stop playing with your balls!

Ma'am so the light travelling from the far side of the universe has farther to travell than I do to grasp how much further this thread will run?

EZ

Ps. My Father told me to go no further, than the farthest I have already gone with this.

Help me Nicole, my mind can not further comprehend what we have concluded, which is zero. Hey, isn't zero a distance so maybe I should have said farther?

Exactly. A gold star for you, with one point off for spelling.

Anybody want to conjugate verbs?
