Calling people nigger, or using similarly pointed words, to point out their own soft affirmative bigotry towards people who think differently that they do is not racist but a tactic.

People have been so conditioned to knee-jerk reflex that they do not even think about their reaction to anyone who would dare challenge the manufactured cultural consensus of the Left which has gotten to the point that it spends more time being outraged than Islam...

We have come to label that which merely disagrees with us with terms of utter contempt in order to avoid thinking about why we disagree; one can say anything, anything at all about an enemy...

Contemporary leftists, on the other hand, view their opponents as people you send off to the Gulag, unworthy of any respect, deserving of any kind of low blow, no matter how foul. So you accuse Goldwater of insanity, slander Justice Thomas as a sexual monster, casually publish plays, books, and films calling for the assassination of President Bush, and assault the first serious Republican female candidate at her weakest point -- her family. If it's a tactic, it's a racist tactic. I refrain from using that tactic because it references an entire group of people and the assumption of "undesirable traits" in that group and not the undesirable traits of the referenced individual. I've heard the argument before and I think it's more bullshit justification. "Oh, it doesn't bother me, but it bothers them" is not an excuse. It's just taking the easy way out. There's too much collateral damage.

Calling someone a fag is based on the assumption that being a fag is a bad thing in the eyes of enough people in the group of "non fags" to attempt to infuriate the target.

Calling a man a pussy or telling him to put on a dress is based on the assumption that to a man, being accused of being girly is a bad thing.

The assumption is the idea that the group being indicated is somehow less desirable than the group they assume they belong.

There's nothing wrong with being gay, female, black...but the tactics used to demean those groups are pretty clear cut and demonstrable in bb's posting. If you agree with those tactics, guess what...you are missing the big picture as to why it's a stupid and potentially destructive thing to do, mostly in the mind of the person doing it. They try to use hot button short cuts instead of actual arguments or facts. They try to incite dislike by comparing an individual to a socially marginalized group.

That is attributing positive qualities to one group and negative to another. That is bigotry. When it's applied in terms of race, it's racism. When it's applied in terms of homosexuality, it's homophobia. When it's applied to women, it's misogyny.

I'm fine calling one individual any number of names that can point out something undesirable about their character, but I don't compare an individual to an entire group of "undesirables", attempting to lower their social status in the "approved" group. It would diminish the focus on an individual, and demean the group, and therefore demean myself.
