It just screams fraud to me.

I called my mother tonight, and she was telling me about this Herbologist-Reflexologist-Iridologist she was seeing for her various problems. Okay, herbology and reflexology I am somewhat familiar with, and can understand. But iridology?! This guy looks in her eyes, examining her iris and is supposed to be able to tell what's wrong with her. Yeah, right!

Any insights into this "medical art"? (or whatever the hell it is)

Every UK Optician claims that the eye tells a great deal about your health - but it doesn't take an iridologist.

Maybe he fancies her - but then telling her what's wrong with her isn't the best chat up line.

the power of positive thinking

it sounds like a crock to me, but if your mother thinks it will help, it may do just that. a lot of the "evidence" of how effective these medical arts are can be ascribed to a strong mind-body connection. believing in iridology won't cure cancer or any of that, but it could have some sort of positive effect.

My Aunt believes in this stuff.. yet she continues to battle her medical problems and see a regular dr on a weekly basis.

She has completly bought into this woman who says she can tell her problems by looking into her eyes. She is on a special diet that she can only get from this woman. Pays lots of money for vitamins.. drinks and special foods. Yet she is hospitalized regularly because her insulin levels are way out of whack.

This woman told my aunt it will take a minimum of 3 years of being on this diet to notice a difference.

I don't understand how she cannot see it's a scam.

Not the least of which is the transfer of wealth from the afflicted to the practitioner.

That's what I'm afraid is going on. I don't know how long she's been seeing this guy, but he told her she's full of acid. Prompting her to stop taking the medicine for osteoarthritis. I think that's what it was for. She says her stomach feels better now. I just don't know what to think.

My mother's very opinionated, and you can't tell her anything. She knows it all. She's convinced this person is helping her. I don't know that he isn't, but I don't really buy it.

My ex had someone do to this to her and the person was able to tell her basic problems. She hired her to work this woman's shelter she was running and nearly killed her though. She wouldn't let her eat hardly anything. Just certain things and since she worked at a lab she only let my ex take pills that she was developing. My ex developed diverticulitus and was running a 105 and the woman wouldn't let her even have tylenol. Someone called an ambulance though and the doctor told the woman that if he ever heard of her disallowing medical treatment that he would call the police.

The woman still practices iridology and herbology as far as I know. SHe just doesn't force it on anyone. She's a strange lady...

Osteoarthritis is progressive and irreversible. There are treatments that provide temporary relief and help reduce the rate of progression of the affliction. There is no cure.

Your mother's health care professional has probably already done blood chemistries on your mother and knows to a Tee exactly what her blood PH levels are and would take appropriate action if a problem were percieved. She is playing with fire.

Just remember April, it is HER life, HER money, and HER choice. Do your best, but no matter what the outcome, NEVER blame yourself.

I don't blame myself. She's an adult and supposed to be able to take care of herself. But she's lonely, and I think she's being taken advantage of.

Jehovah's Witness as well. And you hear about how religious communities are supposed to be looking out for each other and taking care, right? Well, apparently that only works if you need help very rarely. For ongoing situations, it doesn't work out so well. Yeah, they've cleaned for her, but only a few times. And she's been there for others often. Using her truck to haul stuff, volunteering her time to sit with the sick. Now she needs, and they're not around.

She wants me to come home. They all need me. I'm the only healthy one! LOL

Cute Av, April.

This is news to me...well, on the farm I used to look into the stock's eyes for signs of infection, dehydration, lack of rest. They couldn't answer questions, after all.

This strikes me as over the top, kinda like ,well, reflexology.
Having somebody play with your feet can improve your circulation, reduce stress, and make you feel happier...but beyond that it's the power of placebo.
