Ok, you Irfanview fans - a quick question. Will this program allow me to edit the background out of a picture? I've been asked to create a memorial service program and was given a picture to use. I've cropped the picture to the desired size, but want to eliminate the background because it has other people in it. Ideally, I'd like to substitute a neutral color for the current background. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated, as I have very little knowledge or experience with picture alteration.

PS - The service is on Wednesday, so quick replies are especially appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

I don't know about Irfanview, but GIMP (also a free program, and it's very powerful) will. You just start it, open your pic from the File menu, zoom in and then you can do something like use the lasso tool to outline the background you want to change. From there, you can click the paint bucket tool, select the color you want, and click anywhere on the background to fill it in. Depending on the pic, there are other tools that might be quicker to use.

I'll help you with this, if you want. I could do the main part and fill it with the color you want, then you could download GIMP and change the color if you don't like it. I'll PM you my email. :)

Irfanview can do it, but it's a time consuming proposition because Irfanview only allows rectangular selections, so you have to select as big an area as you can fit a rectangle into, clear the selection, and then select progressivlely smaller rectangles to get into all of the nooks and crannies of the foreground you want to keep.

Gimp sounds like a better tool for the job in this case, or share the image with someone who has photoshop or another full-feature image editor.

The GIMP is a good program, but the interface can be a bit different. You may also want to try Paint.NET, which is pretty powerful and easier to use :)
