Iraq 'will have nuclear bomb in months'

IRAQ could produce nuclear weapons within months using pirated German equipment and uranium smuggled from Brazil, according to a dissident Iraqi nuclear scientist.

The revelations painting an alarming picture of President Saddam Hussein’s nuclear capabilities came as the White House made its strongest link yet between Saddam and al-Qaeda, and demanded a United Nations resolution as soon as this week.

Dr Khidir Hamza, who was science adviser to the Atomic Energy Establishment and later helped to start and direct Iraq’s nuclear bomb programme before he defected in 1994, claims in an interview with The Times today that Saddam could be in a position to make three nuclear weapons within the next few months, if he has not already done so.

What scares the hell out of me is that we know for a fact that he DOES possess plenty of chemical and biological weapons - and he's proven himself totally willing to use those. If we push him into a corner and he knows he's going to die, he'd be very likely to use as mucch of those as he could on us, then give the rest to his "friends" (aka our terrorist enemies) who will use them on US civilians for years & years to come.

This is a touchy situation. I wish I had more faith in it being handled with the diplomacy necessary.

All it takes is a little pleasure yacht piloted into NY harbor or maybe LA or SF. How many yachts with registry from some Carribean Island visit NY daily? They're not inspected, they're not detained, no one goes out to the yachts to search the boat shoes. The terrorists have already shown that they have lots of people willing to sacrifice their lives to destroy us.

I guess we pushed Hitler into a corner too so that he felt compelled to let loose his Panzers on Poland? Not.

Were we pushing Saddam into a corner when he decided to use chemical weapons on the Kurds (as I recall it, we'd just let him off the hook)? Not.

I haven't decided one way or another whether I think it's a good idea to have a pre-emptive strike, but I know that I'm not satisfied with the appeasement or the "ignore him and he'll go away" approaches.

I think that the bluster of war might be enough for Saddam to agree tp full and open UN inspections. I also think that this bluster of war is the only thing that's motivating them to take their heads out of the sand. If the UN can't force the issue of full inspections, then the UN is impotent and irrelevant.

Rummy Rumsfeld mentioned that while he does support a full-scale invasion of Iraq, he doesn't want to expose our troops to chemical and biological weapons again.
