I heard a rightwing talk show host who happens to be Jewish and is an uncompromising pro-Israel fellow going on about how much "worse" Iran is than Saudi Arabia.

I'm sorry I don't see this. In fact, not only don't I view Iran as a better potential ally of the US than Saudi Arabia, I don't see how its even a particular "threat" to Israel. Iran is more "western" than Saudi Arabia. Its got a highly educated population. Women are not only present but increasingly prominent in the professions in Iran. While Iran remains poor it has far more potential for longterm development while Saudi Arabia has gotten rich only from natural resources and done nothing to actually develop a modern diversified economy. Saudi Arabian Islam is more extreme than Iran in practice as well. Iran has some semblance of at least flawed democracy, while Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy.

We are told Iran is the "big threat" to Israel because a couple of Presidents back, their President supposedly made some statement "Israel should be wiped off the map." Big woop. A statement from a political leader for a domestic electoral audience, and may have even been mistranslated. While at the same time, there have been members of the Knesset in Israel who have also said "Iran should be wiped off the map." People say stuff, big deal. Its just hyperbole for their electoral audiences.

We are also told that Iran is a "state sponsor" of terrorism. While this may have been true 30 years ago, its really a distortion to make any sort of such claim today. At the same time, nearly all the major 21st century western Islamic terrorism incidents have some tie to Saudi Arabia.

I believe that both the US and Israel are misguided in their hysteria against Iran. The US because it still mad about the hostage incident 35 years ago and Israel because of an outdated historical animosity between Jews and Persians going back to Biblical times in the book of Esther.

Its time to get with the 21st century and stop the misguided hysteria toward Iran.
