As far as I can tell, these seem to be the best two "smart" phones you can get right now.

I am looking to get a new phone, but can't decide which. Perhaps people here may have some good suggestions or advice. The iphone seems to have cornered the market, but the HTC seems to be catching up. One downside though is the HTC is not 3g (as far as I can tell). I've never had a touch screen type phone before, so this is a tough choice for me. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have an iPhone, which I absolutely adore. The features are ridiculously easy to use and are extremely useful. I didn't think I would use the phone as much as I would, but I do. The screen may take a day or two to get use to, but I prefer it actually. It's easier to keep it clean than a keypad. I found that it operates on the same basis as a Mac, which is virtually idiot proof.

When I bought my phone, I was looking at a HRC (I think it was the magic) and it looked promising. I guess that my being used to Apple, my great satisfaction with the company and the cost factor won out.

The iphone for sure, no contest and the tight asses at AT&T are even going to activate MMS texting on Sept 21st, or so they say. That's been my only complaint so far, not being able to text a damn picture.

Just when you think you've found the coolest most ingenious app, there's another one! I can't wait for a Hulu app to come out!!!

Iphone all the way! I have a ipd touch and I love it so much! I would get the phone but i've been with tmobile and my plan has been grandfathered in soooo many times it would be dumb to leave them just for a phone, but I get a close second with my touch:)

If you're not bothered about the [lack of] ethics of Apple then the iPhone is maybe the one to go for if you want to buy now. It won't be long before iPhone is left for dead though as the freedom you'll get with an open phone will be much less restrictive than an iPhone. AFAIK, the Hero is 3G though. Also, iPhone's only available on o2 and you're tied into a long, expensive contract. If I was looking I'd want something on Vodafone for best coverage.

Might be wroth a look here.

Hero definitely available as 3G People there saying pretty much what I just did in that the iPhone has more apps at the moment, iPhone is very expensive and that apps for open source phones will explode in the future. On person there he has a friend with both iPhone and Hero with the Hero being the much better phone.

Apple are brilliant at marketing which often blinds people to excellent alternatives. Might be worth going to somewhere like Carphone Warehouse and seeing if you can try both. Although having said that I suppose apple will only allow you to buy from specific retailers.

I don't know about the Hero, but I've got an HTC Tytn11.

I love the fact that it can deal easily with things like MS Office straight out of the box and talks to the PC easily (although with the usual MS hicups!) and I like having both the stylus and integrated QWERTY keyboard.
It is a little slow on occasions though and doesn't have as big a screen or the slick design of the iPhone. Also the HTC isn't as widely supported by utterly utterly useless apps for me to spen my hard earned cash on.

I think the lack of keyboard and (more importantly) the lack of stylus put me off the iPhone.
And I'm not sure wich is the bigger evil empire - MS or Apple.
