Involuntary gay? Malmö University has the answer!

Malmö University uses an old (originally Danish) book, "Theories on Development Psychology" by Espen Jerlang, in which homosexuality is described as a mental disturbance, which can be cured by letting the "afflicted" person watch gay porn - and as soon as the subject gets aroused, he/she will get a mild electric shock, to learn to associate gay sex with unpleasantness. As soon as the interest has been turned away from gay sex, the subject is then encouraged to learn a desired sexuality, ie the "normal" heterosexuality. This is done by masutrbating while watching straight porn.

How old is this book and these nonsense theories? 40 years? 50? 60? 1800?

WRONG!

It was written and published in 1988, and the third (and most recent) edition came out (sorry for the pun!) 1999.
Why does Malmö University use such rubbish as a course literature? Because it's "the best book they've been able to find."

Unfortunately, some of the theories: not so stupid.

there's a sexual re-education programme in the United States that deals with Sex Offenders like flashers, peeping Toms etc. Basically they subject them to videos and soundtracks of their personal 'perversion', whilst at the same time subjecting them to unpleasant physical sensations such as shocks and foul smells.

Apparently this does actually have some success.

I saw a TV prog on it ages ago, so can't remember much more, but <shrugs> people can be persuaded to associate unpleasant sensations with certain acts, thus turning them from those acts. Whether these can then be replaced by societally 'normal' acts is another question...

I'm not saying the "therapy" won't make an impact in a person's psyche, what I'm objecting to is the fact that even in these modern times, homosexuality is seen as a "disturbance" that needs to be treated! As if heterosexuality is the one and only form of sexuality that can be accepted. Live and let live, is what I'm saying...

The big irony is that the author was from Denmark, the first land to legalize gay marriages...

I'm waiting for the textbook which advocates deprogramming fascists.

I think this is a good theory and we should try it out.

All we need is some rabid George W supporters, a few video tapes of W giving speeches, and some sandwiches made from broccli, onions, whipped cream and sardines. :p

"Beethoven never hurt anyone! He just made music!"

I recall taking a psych class where the teacher was a devote of B.F. Skinner and our text book was on how to use his method to cure folk. When I asked the teacher if she's seen "A Clockwork Orange" her response was, "I refuse to see that movie!"

Which I took as a refusal to see what negative as well as positive uses such methods could be used for.

I may be incorrect, but I believe that such methods aren't reliable in the long run unless the person really wants to be cured--and keeps up with other forms of therapy to reinforce it.

Gah. I totally agree with that. Sorry, I thought you were exclaiming in horror at the thought that somebody could be changed. My bad.
Mind you... with the programme I was talking about they were trying to 'fix' people with perceived perversions such as paedophilia or flashing or whatever. Who draws the line? How do they decide? What gives them the right?

I personally feel homosexuality is normal (hey, I'm bisexual, it'd be weird if I didn't) but paedophilia is unacceptable... but to some people homsexuality is unacceptable.

I'm just saying... I don't know, sexual behaviour and sexual norms are a complicated area, aren't they?

I believe this proves the adage that: "No matter where you are, no matter how enligntened or utopic the culture, there will always be idiots."

And wherever there's an idiot with a crackpot idea, Sweden will be right behind to pick up that nonsense!
