Meeting new people can be very awkward. But it can turn out to be fantastic. I've made a handful of really close friends here over the past couple years and had many amazing conversations about every subject under the sun. This can be a wonderful site. I know how you feel. I was a member for a couple of years before I ever posted or even did anything but read stories. The a couple months ago I jumped in and started adding to different threads so, I'm pretty new myself. You'll have a good time.
