Why do they do what they do?

I see it happening often and I am still surprised at the effort that is made to comment disparagingly and relentlessly. It reminds me of chum in the water and watching the sharks circle waiting to have a nibble.

I'm not talking about snide and snarky remarks. I'm referring to say a celebrity posting what seems like an almost non event such as look at my new bling and suddenly the trolls are off. Telling the celebrity they're flaunting their wealth and that they hope they choke on their champagne or their dog gets eaten by a crocodile. Some even go as far as saying go kill yourself and you're a waste of space.

I find it perplexing and kind of sad. I shake my head and I just don't understand why they behave the way they do.

They are mean behind a keyboard to feel strong. Cause they know, in the light of day, among the living, they are meaningless and small. Perhaps we've created them by ignoring them walking around in society. Nevertheless, the trolls must be fed, and there is plenty of flesh to go around.

They're kinda like gremlins.. Never feed them after midnight.

:)

In my long life its always been the nice people who made the most problems for me.

Nice people are stealthy and sneaky, trolls are obvious.

Trolls insult you, Debbies poison you.

Some people are bitter and online is there only place to vent. Others are assholes everywhere they are. I've been sacked into drama upon occasion. I try not to though.

Why do they do what they do?

Because they can. Anonymity shows the world what people are really like on the inside.

Perhaps because they themselves were victims of abuse or circumstance and now want to retaliate in an environment that lets them lash out with little to no fear of rebuke.

Or maybe because they just enjoy being a dick.

Lemme guess.
You handled those scumbags like a super lady.

Well , here is the other thing. How we behave around it as bystanders also reflects on us.

There are a lot of times I have not taken pride in my behaviour in this regard.

If we allow, encourage or even ignore this activity we're not much better than the people doing it. And most everybody loves drama as long as they aren't directly involved. Reality TV is just one example of this. Might explain why no news is good news. We'd rather see something horrible happening to someone else. It speaks volumes to me of humans in general.

[Lots of roses]

I would like to have given you a dozen roses but we are only allowed ten images

That's very sweet of you! Thanks. :)

I try to make people around me smile. It's one small way I can help them to have a better day. It doesn't negate the fact that I'm a cynical old fart that tends to see the worst in humanity.

Now, I may just be willing to cut Hashie a break, here.. he/she's saying all the right stuff.

I'm on record for absolutely zero tolerance for alternative login names. My return under new cover is blatantly open, as are the reasons.

Trolls exist. Most get an almost sexual thrill from their limp attempts to wreak havoc with others' Net experience or even REAL LIVES!

Good on Debbie for stirring the pot, positively- and all of the real people above for their input!

Unhappy people do unhappy shit. Haters gonna hate. Etc. Etc.

In a rare moment of sincerity and seriousness:
I've been pretty vocal myself and critical of certain posters, but I acknowledge too that I cut those whom I like and myself some slack. And I've seen others do the same.

It's something that happens quite often: the trolls and bullies are always on the adverse team and never on your own.

N.B. An important criteria that sometimes gets forgotten: consistency as in or frequent behaviors over a long period of time.

The term "team" implies "us and them"... very indicative of present day reality in the US.

I'm much more comfortable with "We"... community is much more inclusive and allows for a diversity in opinion.

For example, I post with, and enjoy, certain individuals who followed different parties in the American election.

It's in the Attitude. MY view only.

However, Pookie's pithy note works, also.

I don't let politics or religion or such dictate "teams" for me. For many that is their way of life in that you're either with us or against us. I've never been able to understand why so many want to live life like that.
