Internet polls are pointless

I remember Time Magazine (I think) had an internet poll three years ago that invited voters to vote for the greatest person of the twentieth century. Jesus topped the list, by a wide margin. Eric Cartman came in second. There was at least one pro wrestler in the top ten, also.

Yesterday, I read about the BBC poll for the "Best Song of All Time." There was a terrific column in the Chcago Sun-Times about it. I've looked for it online, to no avail. The columnist opined that, while the poll was supposed to show how united the world is through music, what it actually proved was that the world is very much segregated. Most of the songs in the top ten are very specific to certain ethnic or cultural groups. What' really funny is that an Irish republican song came in #1 inn a BBC poll. Here's the top ten:

1. A Nation Once Again, The Wolfe Tones

2. Vande Mataram, Various artists

3. Dil Dil Pakistan, Vital Signs

4. Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu, llayaraaja

5. Poovum Nadakkuthu Pinchum Nadakkuthu, Thirumalai Chandran

6. Ana wa Laila, Kazem El Saher

7. Reetu haruma timi hariyali basant hau nadihruma timi pabitra ganga hau, Arun Thapa

8. Believe, Cher

9. Chaiyya chaiyya, A R Rahman

10. Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen

However, the #8 choice really shows the stupidity of the online poll.
