Internet Explorer

I recently removed load of spyware from my neighbor's computer. Now he can't access the internet via Internet Explorer. When IE is opened, it freezes for a few moments then tries to access the web. I've tried uninstall/reinstall, checking firewall settings, etc.

Right now he's using Mozilla Firefox, but insists that IE be returned to it's former state.

Any ideas?

Tell him to get over it because IE SUCKS!
Its a direct port into his OS that can only lead to trouble.


But, if he's that insitant, try installing/reinstalling SP2, that should fix it. Explorer is part of the Windows OS (hence why you can't really delete it).

I had forgotten that Add or Remove Programs/Add or Remove Windows Components doesn't really uninstall anything.


SP2 worked just fine.

Check the home page setting for IE. If there was a lot of spyware on the pc, it's likely that his home page was hijacked, and IE may be getting locked up in looking for the now-blocked spyware page. Reset to google.com or something, and see if that works.

It's also possible that you didn't get rid of all the spyware. Did you run several different programs? Often, one program won't catch everything, but if you use multiples, you're more likely to get it all.

Removing and Reinstalling SP2 worked just fine.

As far as Spyware goes. I'm pretty sure I got it. I used Spybot, Ad-Aware and Pest Patrol.

Another dig into Internet Explorer is if you're operating a Mac, they'll stop supporting it before long. Ditch 'em I say & switch to Safari or Firefox.

If your friend can't live without IE, there are a few options you can try. Use Firrefox to go to the Microsoft homepage and try to download IE is one of them. The Netscape browser uses a combination of Firefox and IE, so using that to download might be easier.

Or you could find the original discs that came with the computer and use the repair function. If you do this EVERYTHING on the computer gets wiped out. There is no backup and no recovery. Plus you then have to reload all the programs and updates that have been added to the computer. So make sure all files are moved off the computer BEFORE you try this. I did this by accident once and lost a bunch of stuff.

Or - and this can be a royal pain - pick up an AOL, Earthlink, etc. disk. I believe that they all have IE. It will load and overlay on the IE you now have. Problem is, you can't get rid of the "internet explorer brought to you by Earthlink" sentance at the top of the page.
