why do i have to push the delete button when i star my computer up? when i turn it on at the bottom it says to push delete to cont. just started doing this about an hour ago.

We need a lot more information than that, but I suspect it has nothing to do with IE. What type of computer do you use? What operating system do you run? Have you installed any programs recently? Do you use antivirus software?

its a dell comp. the other night i shut it off properly and since the when i turn it on i get the screen where it detects everything and then at the bottom it says push the delete button to continue. its the screen where it checks the system and detects the key board and mouse and what ever else it looks for. it never use to do this. also i just found out i cant get in my bios. i already did the jumper to reset all passwords and that didnt work.

i have windows me. i also cant get into my bios so what ever happened i guess its related to that.

If Windows loaded, your BIOS isn't having any troubles. Especially if it's WinME. Sounds like an option got switched somehow.

I think on Dell computers, you load BIOS setup by hitting F10 during/after POST (the Power On Self Test). This is probably where you have DELL in big blue letters on a black screen right after booting.

Be very careful when nosing around in your BIOS setup, and look at the bottom of the screen for keystroke instructions for navigating the menus.

So look through all the menus in BIOS that look like could have something to do with it (there's probably a new error message that you're missing somewhere above "Press Delete to continue").

Or get a computer-knowledgeable family member or friend to take a look. Or, better yet, try a Computer Tech Support forum or even your Dell support line.

Dell computers have some proprietary features that make this kind of problem difficult for those of us who own them or deal with them on a regular basis.

On any other machine, I'd say that the battery that saves your setup information in the BIOS is dead and it has to reload the default settings and detect the hard-drive before it can continue booting.

A Dell specific help forum is probably the best place to find more detailed information. If this is a dead battery, there should be dozens of complaints and questions posted somewhere on the web.

been working on this all day and still cant figure it out. also i found out i cant run scan disc on my second hard drive. it goes 3/4 of the way and freezes.

i found out what was wrong with my second hard drive but still havnt got the delete button at startup fixed yet. i think mabe its time for a new comp.

If that's all that's wrong, I'd just press delete when it asked me to. Then again, I'm way too poor to buy a new machine.

Phew...there are moments when I'm glad I'm on a MacIntosh system for the majority of my work.

it never use to do that but im the type of person that when somthing changes and i dont know why it bugs the heck out of me. i gonna fix it hopfully im going to best buy and get a 180 gig hard drive. and reintstall windows.

that will not change anything with the "problem"

the message happens way before windows starts up, and a reinstall wont change that message.

this is a BIOS and/or motherboard issue

let me poke in our dell at work

with our dell, hitting "delete" just as the dell logo shows up will bring you into the BIOS setup.

Im with WeirdHarold, could well be the battery.

yeah im going to try a new battery to. i also ran a virus check and everything is clean. ill see what happens. i hang around on this board alot so to everybody that answered thanks hopfully ill get it fixed.

good news i found out what it was i had a bad bus cable but when i tell the wife its a bad hard drive always need bigger. but i have another quest not sure what this is but when i check the system info i look under problem devices i have a problem with the acpi irq holder for pci irq steering. what does this mean and does it affect anything?

IRQ == Interrupt (Service) Request.

Interrupts are how your computer knows that you moved the mouse, typed a character, have data waiting to send or receive to a device and many other basic functions of the system.

However, with the advent of PNP hardware and operating systems, IRQs assignments are more flexible than in older systems and the PCI Buss and card definitions make them even more flexible -- to the point where it's difficult to know from day to day which device is using which interrupt.

The device that isn't working on your system is one that manages the differences in the various ways that IRQ use has evolved from the old ISA Buss structure of the originl IBM PC to what we use now.

I would expect that if you've only got the original equipment or additional drives that it's not going to cause any problems, although it may cause something obscure that you won't notice unless you look for it.

Where it's likely to cause problems is with older programs or older hardware that require specific interrupts to be used for specific things to work right -- Like many older Communications programs won't work if the modem is not on IRQ-4 or IRQ-3 and some print programs expect the printer to be at IRQ 7.

The problem is one that should be fixed, just in case, but it's not likely to be an immediate danger to hardware or data.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how you would fix it -- although I'd start with reloading the drivers for it.

well i got the new hard drive setup and guess what still had the problem but i found out what the problem is. it my slave hard drive. when i took it out everything works fine. so i tryed to se it up as a main and the problem showed up with that. its a maxtor hard drive so i checked there web site and still under warrenty so maybe ill be gettig a new one.
