Ok just inadvertently erased my post ... the original sentiment was that I went to Henrietta Hudson in NYC. I was disappointed by it because it was supposedly the best club in Manhattan. I found it did not compare (even remotely closely) to Toronto dyke bars. I expected a CLUB 54 of dyke action in NYC ... I found nice people, but the venue was small and hardly a club. It did not live up to my expectation of a NYC dyke bar.

Have you been to Henrietta's in NYC? If so thoughts - if not? What clubs have you gone to that did not meet with original expectations?

There's a dyke bar not far from my house, but it's just too carcinogenic. Can't wait 'til they enforce the ban on smoking.

You are a bit too anal retentive.

The first "women's dance" that I went to was a fundraiser for a women's shelter or something - it was held in a local community centre. Quite honestly I didn't really notice much of a difference from High School - went to a catholic school that was starting to go co-ed which meant 8 girls for every guy. So a gym decorated with crepe paper and with balloons hanging down from basketball nets while women danced together - really wasn't all that different. Of course, once the slow songs came on - things got much more interesting.

As for bars - I've only been to one lesbian bar and it was tucked away beneath a parking garage near a downtown mall. You had to know where you were going to find it. It was a local institution and was the oldest lesbian bar (actually only lesbian bar on Fridays, the boys got it the rest of the time) in the city, but by the time I went, it was a bit of a let down.

You bring up a dance as opposed to a club ... it makes me think you are older ... A GOOD THING ... Thanks for your take!

38 isn't old.

I just don't like bars all that much ... was never a big drinker and couldn't stand the m/f meat markets that all my friends went to. There weren't a lot of lesbian bars here ... so I didn't go.

Trust me, I was really very interested in going to my first lesbian bar .... but I was sick with a cold, the woman I was infatuated with was dancing with another and the bar was kind of grungy. So it wasn't what I expected.

Although I'm not a lesbian... :D ...I did end up in a Lesbian bar once in Seattle. I didn't realize what type of bar when I first entered. I had a drink when a tough looking person came up to me...I think she was sent over to run me out...I noticed she had a Ducati shirt on under her motorcycle jacket...and at the time I owned a Ducati...I ended up having a great time...and made a friend...

Even tough dykes have a soft spot! ;)

I've always been well treated the times I have been in lesbian bars. Gay bars too...I just get flirted with more in them.
