Interactive whiteboards

Does anyone here have any experience with interactive whiteboards such as Promethean or SMART board...any teachers around here who would like to share their experiences?
Any comment or suggestion is appreciated

personally i think they are a great tool and once you egt used to using one you start to wonder what you did without one

of course it all depends on the application of what it is being use for but I have used them to demonstrate software and explain tasks and it made things a lot easier

I think the SMARTboard is great for showing webdocuments and worddocuments to a group and I like that I can add text or symbols to the document. It is also great for showing movies or pictures.
You should keep a small normal whiteboard for writing by hand though because no matter how beautiful your handwriting may be it will look like the scribbles of a treeyearold on the smartboard.

I use smartboards all the time for presentations in business situations. In fact we also have a portable one that collapses down and we take on site.

Just use the smartboard lots to gain the full potential. We go live on the web, PPT, put up spreadsheets and charts, which you can then interact with live and also use them with vide conferencing btw two regional offices where the smartboards are linked.

I would like to know about one particular way in which you have used it...

you can project geometry sketchpad....

or... we have a program so you can take roll right in front of the students...

I only have experience with SmartBoards from being a student in high school.
For the teachers that knew how to use them, they were pretty awesome, but too many of my teachers had no clue what they were doing, meaning a lot of wasted class time trying to figure it out.
I would suggest using them, they are helpful, but making sure those using them know what they are doing before they put it into real time use.

Here in the UK they have pretty much taken over. I understand that they are great in so far as you can use a variety of resources in the classroom in an integrated fashion.

I remember at university where lecturers would be writing onto OHP rolls, then juggling with OHP transparencies and getting in a complete tangle.

Basically I wanted to talk to someone who had used them before to hear what they had to say about them, you know the prons and cons. Hmm, sounds like you need one to give a presentation with. You could probably get one on loan from a company trying to sell them.

I am using the SMART board from the other school where I work. It's actually a demo class what I'm going to do, my boss wants to see what you can do with it in class.

I've used them for interactive games, to help display web pages to help with lessons and to use in replacement of a chalkboard/whiteboard.

They have numerous uses. I've also hooked one up to a VCR to show a video too.

I have used a couple of these bad boys.

I find the SMART board by far the best - but each to their own.

It works at all levels for instance - I have been able to demo various software packages to executives and teach co-workers how to do things.

The board we have is able to record what you do; for instance I recorded a session on how to create a macro in Excel. Once the recording was finished I was able to play the recording back on any PC, the video showed the mouse movements and keystrokes - great tool for teaching others.

I agree with the other posts here that say you need to have someone who knows what they are doing with it first - as soon as students see someone fumbling with technology their credibility can take a major hit.
