According to Rosemary Hopcroft, a sociologist at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, intelligence is inversely linked with sexual frequency (people with higher levels of education often report lower numbers of sexual partners). In parallel, intelligence has been linked to unconventional sexual practices and frequent sexual activity, thoughts and fantasies.

^ Friedman, L.F. (2011, July).Intellegent Intercourse. Psychology Today. 44, 41.
^ Thompson, Mark (1). "3". Who Should You Have Sex With. Sourcebooks Casablanca. p. 78. ISBN 978-1402242045. "In my studies, men and women who described themselves as smart, intelligent, logical and imaginative reported thinking about sex more often, fantasizing about sex, and having sex more often than people who did not see themselves as smart or intellectual. They also usually had a wider scope of sexual experiences, including experience with role-playing and other Kinky activities."

I write erotica. practice a BDSM lifestyle and the wife and I not only role play every week, but are working together on a book about it.

According to this guys waste of funding I must be a damn genius.

Something my apparently above average mind keyed in on were the words "described themselves"

So did he think someone ws going to describe themselves as "Duh, like I'm really fucking dumb!"

Only dummy here is the idiot doling out information gathered simply by asking "Hey, you smart? Hey, how many times you have sex? What kind of sex?"

Guy was probably whacking off while he asked the questions. Who the hell grants these assholes money?

Sigh, I think I should go up there and take Rosemary out on a date and show her how smart I am.

There are plenty of people who would not select "intelligent" from a list of traits, nor would they produce it themselves if asked. Not saying that nobody describes themselves wrong, but I do think that intellectual type people are much more likely to use the word intelligent, (and to value the trait of intelligence because believe me there are many who do not value it) to describe themselves.

That would be a misrepresentation of the data. No where did the same say those who do xy and z MUST be geniuses. I think (hope) that you realize this.

PS. Why the hostility?

So people who say they're smart automatically are?

Hold on, I'll be right back. I'm going to head on over to Mensa and tell them to let me join cause I'm smart dammit.

Also you have to be an "intelligent type" to know the word intelligent?

Those are arrogant generalizations.

This is a moronic study done by an idiot using half ass research to come to a conclusion no one cares about.

Hope she didn't answer that she was intelligent.

Uh... no. I didn't say any of that.

please note I said "intellectual type" which is not the same as intelligent type.

Read your own post, or what you pasted from the study

Experience with role playing and other kinky activities correlates with "intelligent people" according to the dipshit you quoted.

Therefore according to my sex life/lifestyle and hobbies I'm just a step shy of Einstein.

as for hostility people post these "studies" all the time. There are far better things schools can do with their money besides donate it to what is literally useless information.

This is another quack trying to get her name mentioned and trying to quantify and categorize certain types of people which anyone with an actual intelligence knows is impossible

But I guess they would be out of a job if people caught onto that.

Again. Why the hostility? (Did you get lost on your way to the general board?)

Also... conclusions that NO ONE cares about. That is a broad generalization which is untrue. YOU don't care. I do. I am someone. Others may as well.

Then take this one to the bank for your study. The study dictates people with "higher levels of education"

Formally I have a GED only.

MY IQ however, tested at over 145.

Ironically I never describe myself as being intelligent, because I don;t feel the need to say I am.

My point is, going by what people "tell you" is an idiotic thing to base research on. People lie, especially ones with low self esteem who need to be thought of as intelligent.

As for the GB seeing this has nothing to do with writing erotica (Author's hangout) I think you got lost.

I guess you're not a fan of social sciences. Damn. Ok, sorry people study things that YOU don't approve of. Some people are interested in how people think about things, and about human sexuality it's called social psychology. Some of us ARE interested in the weird inner workings of the human mind and libido. Just cuz you aren't doesn't mean it's idiotic. I don't know you, but you seem very small minded.

Yeah it says correlates. It doesn't say correlates perfectly, 100%- 1.0 correlation. No, it doesn't say that. I understand correlate, thank you. I don't think you do.

Self reports do have limitations. All research does. That's why they do multiple studies on the same question to see if they still get the same results.

I am on the GB because I am an author. I haven't been here in a while but when I was, us authors would hang out here (Author's Hang Out) and talk about many things not directly related to writing. It's just a hang out. It's not a class room.

LC's hostility has its own life-- like some sort of zombie worm in his head. it crawls out through his ear and starts screaming. Don't pay it no mind...

Personally, the only plot bunny I get from this is intelligent people enjoying hawt sex. I don't remember ever writing a dummy.

I suspect that folks with interesting sex lives have a cluster of traits that predispose them to above-average sexual activity, I can think of several. That said, I'm betting that fondness for and attraction to your partner rank highest for creating enthusiasm for sex.

idk if there are any plot bunnies... :) but since it's not the story ideas thread i wasn't worried about that.

I have been using the term "hypersexuality" to describe the way I and others sort of.. address the world sex first, so to speak. It's not the same as being a slut, and sadly not the same as getting laid all the time! The other end of that spectrum of course is asexuality and the online communities of aces that I've encountered seem to indicate pretty high IQs as well. 'course they are on the internet in the first place...

That would be a misrepresentation of the data. No where did the same say those who do xy and z MUST be geniuses. I think (hope) that you realize this.

"Women tend to be shorter than men."

"Nonsense, Brigitte Neilsen is six feet tall!"

PS. Why the hostility?

Some folk react that way just about any time social science research gets posted here. It comes in three basic flavours, depending on the findings:

"We didn't need a professor to tell us that!" (trans: "Findings agree with what I already believed")
"This is rubbish, obviously the professor got it wrong!" ("Findings do not agree with what I believe")
"Who on earth cares about THAT? The topic is a waste of time!" ("I hadn't thought about this issue before and damned if I'm going to start now.")

All of them can be had with a sprinkle of "my tax dollars paid for this?" on top. (Not that I think all social-science research is good and valuable, but the knee-jerk reaction gets a bit tedious.)

I am dubious about the connection between "intelligence" (whatever THAT means) and self-reported intelligence; the Dunning-Kruger effect shows us that people aren't good at rating their own competency.

But I still find it interesting that people who reported intelligence tended to be more adventurous. I wonder if there's an aspirational thing going on there: rather than "intelligence encourages sexual creativity", perhaps it's "people who want to think of themselves as intelligent seek out activities that bolster that self-image".

bramblethorn, I think I kind of agree with you that...some people who think of themselves as smart...may want to improve thier self image to others and would agree to be more adventurous in the sack (where most people are most emotionally vulnerable to rejection)

I guess people who consider themselves intellectuals are more likely to be open-minded and curious, so willing to explore sex more. Also if you are more intelligent, you are more creative, in sex as in other areas of life.

I think Lovecraft had to struggle in his early education. He is highly intelligent but he wasn't given the opportunities to show that and had to make his own way kicking and hollering, so he's understandably suspicious of how intelligence is rated in this study and anywhere-else. People probably still assume he's some redneck because of his tattoos and whatever and so he puts the bullshit baffles in place very quickly. This appears to be aggressive rather than defensive to people who've casually posted something interesting. Hope he doesn't take offence at this impertinent intervention! Love ya to bits, LC! :rose:

I should describe myself as really really intelligent .... ;)

In plainer language:

"Nerds and Geeks don't get laid as often, but they've been studying the Kama Sutra in the meantime."

:p

In parallel, intelligence has been linked to unconventional sexual practices and frequent sexual activity, thoughts and fantasies.

To me this sounds more like a result of creativity than intelligence. More creative people will have more fantasies (sexual or otherwise), and the more ideas one has, the more likely they are to follow up on one or more of those ideas.

That the same can be correlated to intelligence makes sense as intelligence and creativity are also closely linked.

so he's understandably suspicious of how intelligence is rated in this study and anywhere-else.

TBH, as I hinted above, I have BIG issues with any study that claims to rate "intelligence" per se.* Even when done well (which it often isn't) IQ testing is not the be-all and end-all of intelligence.

*disclaimer: haven't read the studies cited above, have no idea whether they actually made such a claim.
