Instant turn-off!

I'm too old to be able to afford instant turn-offs, though I would have to think long and hard about connecting a second time with someone whose idea of sophistication has anything to do with getting high scores on the relationship quizzes in Cosmopolitan. Or women who don't like food. I can understand having some dislikes (well, not a dislike of bananas, but that's another story) but I just can't fathom people who don't enjoy the pleasure of breaking bread together and having a wandering conversation.

A long time ago, I went on a date to a hockey game. I looked at the guy, who was watching the game, and HIS EAR WAS SO DIRTY IT WAS NEARLY PLUGGED COMPLETELY! WTF? So nasty (vomit emoticon)

While my nails are clean, I break them so much, I have given up on growing them. I used to be able to grow them long but not anymore. A guy friend of mine said it was a turn-off and suggested I get fake nails, which I hate. Oh well... Plus, with long-ass fake nails, how can I stick my finger... never mind

YES! THE EARS! I forgot to mention that. I hate when I can look in someone's ear and see just a bunch of nasty stuff. It's called a cue tip. I don't care that they say you shouldn't stick them in your ears, at least do something.

And I'm with you on the nails. While it's nice to have them painted, long, and looking nice, mine never stay that way. I do so much stuff that ruins them. I feel like it's a waste of time/money. I just keep the rest of myself pretty.

My ears fill up with wax every once in a while. It can happen quite suddenly, no matter how many q tips you suck in them that morning.

I bet yours do too-- you just never actually see it for yourself because your eyes are so busy judging other people's ears. And maybe the people around you don't think it's as disgusting as you do.

Likewise, bad teeth? These days a hell of a lot of formerly middle-class people cannot afford dentists any longer. It's interesting listening to their opinions change about how important a perfect set of teeth should be -- balanced against eating from day to day and covering the rent...

I am not going to tell people that a turn-off should not turn them off. But I am going to say the judgmental nature of some of these comments is a gigantic turnoff.

This was more than wax, I guessing he hadn't touched a Q-tip in some time. It was chunky, multi-colored, and crusty. Unless he had just had a sandstorm blow through his head, this couldn't have been a sudden, waxy surprise.

Judgmental or not, I love reading these. I'm guilty of possessing other's turn-offs too (a couple from this thread) I'll work on em.

On the teeth note, there was a talk radio program which asked a similar question "what are your dating deal breakers?" One guy called in and said he would never go on a date with a woman who had silver fillings. Really? What does he do, say "open up..... ok, now we can go to dinner"
Also on the teeth note, I dated a guy with naturally pronounced fangs, yes! turn-on!

It is an interesting thread. And if it seems overly judgemental, perhaps framing it in the reverse would be helpful.

So... what profile are we looking at here?

A genuine, respectful and kind person, with generally good hygiene, decent manners, and intellectual curiosity.

Who doesn't smoke bananas or hate robots.

And, who's kind to animals, reads fiction, and tips their servers in restaurants! :)

I asked J and he told me there's only ever been one woman who made him leave without having a second cup of coffee and never contact her again.

She didn't know who the Prime Minister was and started to unbutton her shirt during the conversation.

The "you never spend enough time with me" thing.

The guilt trip has the opposite effect.

Then be honest and tell them that you're never going to spend enough time with them, go find yourself someone who doesn't need to have you around.

^_^ I really like food so I think someone who refuses food without first trying it is no fun. I'm also confused by people who say they don't like it when they've never tried. On the other hand if they say, " I tried that once and it was horrible." I wouldn't mind. Also, taste it before you put salt all over it ;)
