Personally, I don't use AOL, I prefer to connect directly to the internet, so AIM is out for me. In case you didn't know, using AOL is (roughly) like connecting to an intranet, and accessing the internet via the intranet's connection to it. Ping rates really suck. I use a local ISP, so I can charge down to their office when the ISP hacks me off and yell at their techie in person. Gawd I can't wait for cable or DSL.

I have ICQ, but I don't use it very often, it is an unweildy pain in the rear, not to mention some of my hacker buddies think it's spankingly hysterical to use it to shut my puter down for me. Ugh. The misfortune is that threats just turn them on.

I gots MSN Messenger and I like it alot, use it through Hotmail account, all free. What makes it nicer is that everyone can use it, whether you use MSN's isp service or not. What I hate about it is that Microsoft owns it and my usual accidental clicking sends the page I'm working with straight to msn.com. I especially like it now that it has voice chatting capabilities, I can use it to call my mother-in-law. Though, I can't tell her I'm using the internet, then she automatically assumes that every hacker in the world is somehow using the connection to figure out the combination to her safe...

What do ya'll use? What do you like about it? Dislike? Is spankingly hysterical really a correctly used phrase?

Hola Muff,

You don't have to be an AOL client to download or use AIM. Now that they own nearly everything, except Microsoft, you can even download a Netscape version of IM. NIM, Nimh, something like that.

Anywho, why choose between ICQ, AIM, PowWow, etc? Download and use them all.

Toodles.

AOL(SM not tm) is great dont get the whole ameorica on line pacakgae just they're instant messager package with file send . its not to bad but doesnt like to play nice with other im services. sad thing is acts crappy most of the time.

features: msg chat & file send

ICQ is really excellent program and highly customizable, even the wounds and has a bout a 95% up time.

features: msg chat & live msg chat & file send & voice messages

MSN faaastly becoming my favorite program since the latest upgrade. 95% up time

features: msg chat and know when totyp by letting you know when the other gyuy is typing & files send & checks your hotmail.

to pick only one would be hard to do, i would be sorely pressed, but these three of the 100 or so i have tried haved proved to stand the tes of fate on a 36.6 modem.

the key to avoid most hackers handi work is no to accept any files that you do not know what they are.

:) well sweetie, they can shut your puter down, or windows, or simply disconnect you without you accepting a file from them. One of ICQ's biggest problems. Some of it has to do with certain .wav files that come with the windows O/S. I don't know much about it, but I know about four places to go to download the crap to do it. I just have no interest in doing so. I'd much rather flirt on a BB and write erotic stories than concern myself with a hack. They can't give you something that actually hurts your computer unless you accept it, so far. Unless they have your outlook express address... but thats entirely different and MS should have a patch up soon. Getting disconnected and having you computer shut down every 15 minutes gets old you know. I cannot believe I have friends like this *sigh*

i have never had a hacker ever be able to shut me down until i excepted somethin, once i accepted it i was trashed

but if they are shutting down your puter and playing with your nmusic and stuff sounds like they are using NetBus, a very basic hack toy, whiuch even someone dead, deaf and dumb can run. it can be sent as anything a pic, a wav {usual way its sent] a game. Norton or Macaffe wil shut it down and clean you puter.

since i got rid of that one file that hides its self very good, nobody has touched my puter

I'm totally with Bliss on this one. I've got MSN Messenger, ICQ, AIM and Yahoo Messenger, although I use MSN and ICQ far more than the other two. One key thing that ICQ has over MSN is the ability to appear 'Invisible' yet still chat. You can't do that on MSN.

Bob hun, I got three firewalls up n runnin, including Norton. Its not a bus or a trojan. Its called a backdoor. An "entrance" into your own personal ICQ program that allows the hack to make the ICQ program think the hack is you. The hack isn't sending anything, he's actually telling your ICQ what to do. Only really good hacks can do it. The other thing is the sending of massive amounts of packets, called a UDP bomb, or a nuke. Also known as flooding. Simply too much information is arriving and you client cannot handle the flood and you're shut down. Nuking kicks you off of your server. I have no idea how they shut your puter down.

The backdoor concept is how the recent rash of hackers managed to get into the FBI site, yahoo's site and the others and take them over. Same concept, smaller scale.

they shut me down by running netbus piggy backed on a wav file i was dumbenuff to accept then they executed the format command and that how they wiped me out that was a year and a half ago, since then i havent accepted thing from people i dont know and nobody has been able to do a thing to my puter, backdoor, front door or sidedoor

but my condolences to you on the havoc they wreaking on your puter

I know where they live and I can get there free...

Sokay, they do it just to be cute and get my attention. Personally I'd prefer a kiss on the cheek or a slap on the ass, but these guys wanna impress me. Its the boob pic. Bad idea, don't do it.

does that mean i can give you a kiss on the cheek or a slap on the ass. can you im me sometime killer icq or aol?

I don't have AOL im and I rarely use ICQ. Don'tcha'll got MSN Messenger? MuffMuff does.
