It sounds like the program left something behind in the system registry. If the program was "spyware" ad-aware can find and remove registry entries for spyware.

I think Norton SystemWorks has a "registry cleaner" function, and there are others available on the web, although I can't think of any specific names right now.

The registry can be edited manually, but it's very easy to really screw up your system if you don't know what's going on in there. Youneed to know how to identify the "key" that's causing the pop-up andhow to remove just what you need to.

It's entirely possible that the pop-up problem is what is messing up AOL and IE. Reinstalling AOL and IE might clear up the problems, but I think the problems are related to a registry entry that reinstalling wouldn't touch.

You can also try Internet Options/content/certificates/advanced and clear all of the ciertificate function check boxes to stop using certificates entirely.

Sorry, wish I could help, but I'm totally computer illiterate. I do love your av though DevilBoy. Good luck, Harold usually has all the answers.

Have you tried removing and reinstalling IE? That should get rid of the "plugin" that it's trying to call when it give you the error.

What program did you remove that's still looking for a digital signature? What exactly does the pop-up say?

A typically unhelpfull Microsoft error message.

Do you know what program was removed that sarted the message to start popping up?

I think you are going to need a registry cleaner to remove old entries in the system registry.

Have you looked in the add/remove programs control panel under add/remove windows components?

IE is typically MS-Stupid and probably won't let you reinstall over an existing copy of the same version -- although it WILL let you upgrade to a version you don't really need and might not work with your system. :(

Sorry, I don't do AOL -- in fact, I just dumped Prodigy because they were bought out by SBC-Yahoo and tried to be more like AOL.

Can't you download it from AOL?

Registry cleaners:

I'm downloading a freeware registry cleaner now from http://www.pcmedixwebs.com/regclean.htm -- I'll let you know if it's any good.

RegCleaner works fine, but it requires a good bit of knowledge about the internal workings of your system and can really screwthings up if you're not careful -- it did ask if I was sure I knew what Iwas doing when I deleted all of the "newfiles" templates.

However, it also suggested I delete all of a programs working directories just because they are currently empty -- if I hadn't know what those empty directories were for, I could easily have killed that program's functionality.

Summary: A good program, but NOT for novices to use without guidance.
