“ Have you seen the Times this morning!”
The London’s Chief Constable slammed down the morning addition of the Times on to the desk of chief inspector Abilene.
“It is he Inspector, Gideon Pincheon! Who else would have the audacity to break into the White Tower under the very eyes of the Tour’s Warders and steal the latest airship designs from the Royal Treasury.”
“Designs we acquired in a similar matter from count Zeppelin”
Detective sergeant Reed muttered to himself as London’s Chief Constable turned to him, his face crimson as the man’s anger grew.
“ Reed that will be quite enough.”
Chief Inspector Abilene’s detective sergeant had the good sense to keep his mouth shut as the Chief Constable continued to fume over this latest theft of secret government documents.
It was no coincidence that he had come to chief inspector Abilene and detective sergeant Reed. The pair had become famous within the inner circles of British power for their handling of the Ripper matter in White Chapel and how they had protected her Majesty’s family form embracement and left the Royal Family to deal with Jack. Now London’s Chief Constable was hoping that the pair could deal with Gideon Pincheon in an equally discreet but effective manner. Major Gideon Pincheon was a decorated hero and recipient of the Victoria Cross with close connection to not only the queen herself, but was a known associate of the Prince of Wales as well. Yet despite his Royal connection he was a man who shunned the lime light and whose likeness was seldom in the Fleet Street papers. A man who moved among the shadows.
“Chief Constable it is one thing to suspect Pincheon of these crimes, to even know he is our man, yet it is quite another matter to prove it in the Old Bailey before a judge and jury My Lord Chief Constable and he can not simply disappear without embarrassing questions arising.”
An idea began to form in chief inspector Abilene’s mind it was daring, unorthodox, and to say the least quite out of the ordinary.
“As you well know Chief Constable this is not the first time we have set our cap for Major Gideon Pincheon and each time he has slipped through our fingers. We have tried to trap him, we have sent constables under cover and yet nothing has worked. I propose we take a different approach My Lord………Miss Bexley.”
All eyes turned to the young stenographer who had been keeping notes on the meeting.
“Miss Bexley I would like you to consider aiding us in our inquiries. Major Gideon Pincheon is know to frequent a certain house in the East end of London called The Chained Unicorn
Detective sergeant Reed shouted,
The Chained Unicorn is a boddy house, a brothel Sir you can not be serious.”
As he stood his eyes shifting between chief inspector Abilene and the shy petite stenographer. For his part the chief Constable was dumb struck at Abilene’s suggestion.
“Gentlemen this is a matter of national security, nothing else we have tried has succeeded, otherwise I would never contemplate such an outrageous course of action.”
Abilene turned his full attention to his young stenographer.
“I can make certain arrangements to protect your virtue and honor Miss Bexley as the The Chained Unicorn caters only to the nobility. Is that not so My Lord Chief Constable?”
The Man’s face turned a dangerous shade of scarlet and yet he held his tongue.
“ I would not ask Miss Bexley if it was not a matter of National Security.”
All eyes were on the young beauty as the three men waited for her answer.
