When the Mangalyaan spacecraft slipped into orbit around Mars on Wednesday after a 10-month voyage, India became the first country to successfully reach the Red Planet on its first attempt.

But the mission's shoestring budget was perhaps its most notable distinction: At a cost of just $74 million, India's space agency put the satellite into orbit for a fraction of what other nations have spent.

The U.S. Maven satellite, for example, arrived in orbit on Sunday in a mission that cost taxpayers $671 million. The European Space Agency's 2003 mission to Mars had an initial budget of nearly $200 million.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has noted that even the Hollywood thriller "Gravity" had a larger budget at $100 million.

"Our scientists have shown the world, a new paradigm of frugal engineering, and the power of Imagination," Modi said in June. "This success of ours has deep historical roots."

The most surprising thing about all this; is that clooney didn't pull off a 'heist' in the movie.

On a serious note, it's quite a feat for India and they have kind of set the bar for the rest of the world in terms of results with a budget.

Love to see their second act....lets go! Lets find life on other planets

Wait, is that $74 million the cost of the whole mission, or just the probe?

The Indian version of "Gravity" only cost $18 to film.

it was cheaper because they didnt make their actors shower durning the production of the film. In fact, nobody showered at all.... they saved thousands on water and soap....one actress was quoted as saying, " it felt like home"

Wow. So Indian people don't shower or bathe is what you're saying, huh?

Classy.

Have you ever seen the special effects in an Indian movie? They are laughable. So I'm sure Gravity still looks better than their fake Mars mission's effects.

When your labor costs 30 cents an hour, you can get things done on the cheap.

....said white trash Beco.

I believe it.

Ever. Done business with an indian?

It probably cost 3x that but they haggled them down.

When your astrophysicists make $15 a day then yeah its not hard to believe that it only cost $74M.
