Fact

The Antarctica Treaty signed in 1959 is still in force but the list of nations has grown substantially.

https://www.ats.aq/e/ats.htm

The competing claims for Antarctic territory are unresolved and in abeyance.

That, I suppose, is because nothing in Antarctica is worth enough to any country to make a fuss over.

There's oil in them thar hills, and possibly gold under the ice...

The Falklands War, apart from Argentina wanting the Falkland Islands and the oil around them, was also about South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. During that war Argentinian military forces were evicted by the British.

Whoever controls those territories has access to a considerable area that could have subsea minerals.

But you have to dig through a mile of ice to scratch the dirt, and get the stuff to port with no roads or railroads, and pay all your miners extra just for being there. It's not profitable.

At present. In a few decades time?

Some of the resources are close to coastlines.

Added. Large parts of inland Antarctica are ice-free and just bare rock.

Ice is easy digging.
