Incest vs. Adultery

A thoughtful and perceptive correspondent of mine recently asked my opinion about his perception that people tend to cheer incest stories, but shun and criticize the authors of adultery stories. Here is the heart of my response:

"Both incest and adultery are taboo. That makes them hot. Adultery, however, includes an element of betrayal. That may be why people react differently to it."​

Anyone have any other ideas or anything to add?

Maybe has to do with a lot of people not having had any negative/hurtful incest experiences in their own lives, so they don't associate the stories with something bad....whereas being cheated on is much more common, so more people are likely to become upset just at seeing the subject raised.

I think the replies here made a lot of really good points. Topically, I enjoy reading stories with both incest and adultery themes in erotica. The two themes, incest and adultery, remind me of how in the majority of incest stories on Lit involving mom/son and dad/daughter, the other spouse is usually somehow out of the picture, one way or another. Either the other spouse passed away or got divorced. I find it interesting, that even in incest stories, adultery is usually shied away from! I actually think it'd be more unique if the spouse wasn't absentee, even if is trickier to handle for the author.
