Incest or not?

A situation more common years ago.

Picture a married man who is concerned about his son's lack of progress, shall we say, in the romance department. He deliberately sets up his full-time mistress with the lad (who for Lit purposes would of course be 18). Might that be considered incest?

I have a mother-son story I'm writing, open in word behind my browser, as we chat in AH.

I would fall in the purist camp of parent-child, siblings, aunts/uncles-adult childern of their siblings. Step-parents are iffy, and anything further isn't.

In the case you outline, if the father watched and guided, I might reconsider.

No, that's not incest. There's nothing incestuous about the relationship between son and the mistress, by any definition. I don't think incest story fans would think of it as incest or get the sizzle they are looking for in an incest story, although it's potentially a very good idea for a story.

In many cultures, back in the day, such scenarios were extremely common. Either set your son up with your mistress or take him to a brothel. Latin American luterature is filled with such scenes. Not incest. Also probably far less common these days.

One could consult a lawyer, I suppose, but you will still get very different answers. After all, incest is generally an unlawful activity. Still the definition differs between countries. Some believe step or adoptive siblings and parents are fair game.

I think one important factor might be whether the mistress is married to the father and how long they have been together. Or whether they all live in the same household.

Thanks. It was a toss-up between that and First Time, with my leaning towards FT. Good to get some other opinions.

As others have pointed out, unless Dad is hanging out watching or actively participating in the sex, it's not incest.

Sounds like a good FT story to me. And maybe focus more on that than dad's involvement .

For me, incest involves cosanguinity. I think step- and in-law stories are a stretch as incest. Legally, perhaps they're considered such, but that's dumb imho. Related by blood, yes incest.

Your story is not incest, unless you get daddy dearest involved in some sexual capacity.

Nice idea, tho. Rock it out.

If son is a virgin, then put it in First Time. Depending on the age of the mistress, Mature might be an appropriate category, too. But not incest.

Until Dad and the mistress get married. Then the relationship would magically turn into incest (unless you don't consider sex with a mother-in-law as incest). Whether it does or not depends on which legal system the characters are living under.

I think by Lit standards it's quasi-incest. Many readers wouldn't consider it incest. I wouldn't. It wouldn't have the same appeal. Not everyone would agree with me, but many would.

Not incest, just a cheating scum bag piece of shit raising his son to be the same. But seeing keeping asshattery in the family isn't incest, you're good.
