Incest or EC?

Choosing a category for a story is not always easy. Lit doesn't have the greatest facility for matching readers to stories, so these clunky categories are what we use. Incest is one of the most popular categories, and it has an ardent fan-base who know what they want. I think that for many of them a sister-in-law just doesn't cut their mustard. They spend most of the time shagging their siblings, parents and grandparents. You can submit your story to Incest, but you might get an adverse reaction from the readers in terms of comments and votes. That might not bother you too much, but it still isn't nice. My latest story went into Erotic Couplings, which is usually the catch-all bucket, and I'm surprised at how many views and votes (positive!) it's getting. It's sometimes difficult to tell what kind of feedback a given story will get. If you emphasize close family and the taboo nature of the relationship, then the Incest category might just work.

Don't forget that whatever category you pick, Laurel may decide your story is better suited to another category and put it in that one instead. (She is usually right
)I put a story in EC and it was 1-bombed like there was no tomorrow!
but I think it was really an HEA romance, so perhaps I deserved it.

Some sites' software puts invisible links behind acronyms and jargon so when you mouse-over, you see the definition. Ask Manu to implement this on LIT (Lotsa Interesting Trash).

Thanks for all the help. The story is up on Incest/taboo now. The traffic (compared to EC) is pretty impressive, but neither of the stories I have up now are getting much comment.
I have another similar question and decided to post it to this thread rather than starting a new one.
Part of the reason I'm here now is to maybe get a kick in the butt and get back to a novel that I started five years ago then set aside at least two years ago.
The two stories I've posted to Lit have been very short and different in style from the novel. The story includes brother-sister incest, but the sex is very diluted by the story. I'm thinking of posting the first seven chapters, but In those first seven chapters only two chapters describe sex. It's also not a very easy read -- especially the seventh chapter.
What category (if any) would take something like that?

Thanks for the pointer. I guess that's the obvious choice. I seemed to recall from reading in HOWTO that there was some hitch to putting things in Novels and Novellas. I'll have to refresh my memory.

It's a matter of context.
There's a lot of porn that adds "step-" onto "mother" or "sister" solely to claim it's "not really incest" when they were clearly trying to make an incest movie.
From a purely legal perspective, I'm sure step- doesn't keep it from being incest. It's a family member, case closed.
From an erotica perspective, in places where nobody blinks an eye at genuine incest situations, it wouldn't surprise me if lots of folks would consider step-incest to be not incest enough. Why have the fake version when you can have the real thing?
Realistically, it depends on the situation. The taboo relies on the familiarity. Incest is forbidden because the Westermarck effect normally keeps us from doing it, and Westermarck isn't actually determined by blood relations but by who you live with as you grow up. If a woman marries a guy with an 18 year old son and is fucking him inside of a year, that's not incest. If a woman marries a guy with a 10 year old son and eight years later they have sex, that is incest.
(Note that the former is an easy plot set-up, the step-mom enters the son's life through the actions of his father, they have instant lust for each other, etc. In the latter scenario, if that's as far as it goes then the fact that she is a step-mom is essentially irrelevant to the story.)

I'm finally getting back into writing! My last posting was in February. Anyway, I just yesterday wrote most of a piece called WHAT IS INCEST? as a companion to WHAT IS CHEATING? (linked in my .sig). It's at 7k words right now and I'll probably take it up to 10k or so, too long for the forum. Not an exhaustive study -- hey, I try to be somewhat funny -- but I look at many of the issues re: real life vs erotica.
Note that the LIT category is named Incest & Taboo. The erotica possibilities IMHO are:
* Sex with someone closer than a first cousin is INCEST
* Sex with a first cousin or further is MAYBE INCEST
* Sex with step-kin (non-blood) or in-laws is TABOO
Again, this is for LIT stories, not real life legalities. Readers here can be rather picky about whether a piece is incest-y enough. If I write of cousin sex then I had better throw in a sibling too. I have a tale in the works with LOTS of step-sibling and -parent sex but I'll post it a Group Sex, not Incest/Taboo, because no player crosses that line.

I know you say 'not real life legalities', but it becomes problematic when you begin to define this. For many cultures on different continents, first-cousin marriage is the most expected, honourable, auspicious, natural or correct way to go; this includes Europe. The Table of Kindred and Affinity, which is the traditional English definition of those who cannot marry due to being too closely related, does not include first cousins, but it does include some step-relations and in-laws. I don't think the table carries legal weight any more, but it is the historic definition of who may marry whom in England. A man sleeping with his wife's daughter (not his own daughter) is/was seen as unacceptable, while a man sleeping with his father's sister's daughter (or any other combination of first cousin) is acceptable.
I imagine that the original intention of Incest & Taboo was to include stories of incest alongside stories with other taboo plotlines. However, the readership is so fixated on incest that any submission to the category that does not include incest is likely to get slammed. Taboo is a Polynesian cultural system that has been widely reapplied by academics and then the general populace for 'things forbidden'. In its non-Polynesian, non-academic use, it is vague. I would say that a story about a nun having sex would fit this category too, but the incest-desiring readers would likely bewail 'wrong kind of sister!'
Ultimately, the author decides whether or not to submit to the category. Laurel decides whether the story is a good fit, and moves it if it isn't (so she is the arbiter of all things I&T). Then the readership can leave all the anonymous comments and 1-bombs they like to show their disapproval.
