I am struck by how the expectations are changed already. Everybody seems to expect this man to give the greatest speech ever, every time he walks to the microphone. What a far cry from hoping the man speaking doesn't make a major flub.
I admit to tearing up a bit as Obama spoke the oath. I have worked to see this man elected. I have never been this involved in a political candidate.
I am not pie-in-the-sky dreamy or unrealistic. But I agree with far more of his ideas than I ever have with another President. Sure, I have areas where I disagree with him. But that is going to be true of anyone elected besides myself.
I thought of Martin's words echoing down the mall and finally, forty years later, reaching the steps of the Capital.
People laughed and cheered and cried... they chanted Obama's name. I can't remember that ever happening before.
His speech was not a brimstone and fire oratory exercise. It was almost solemn. I think that was deliberate. He reached out to the world. He was realistic. He was firm.
It was a speech that said, "There is work to be done, and we will do it."

um, I am pretty sure that my ancestors were not alone in their reasons for coming to the US-- They were forced from their homeland due to religious persecution. The did not want to get rich, only to be able to live their ideals without being kidnapped, killed, other lovely things. They wanted separation of church and state. They wanted to live free, to be able to teach their children, to be able to simply.... live.

Me too. I have her early records on Atlantic, back when she was in full voice. Hearing her sing today was kind of sad.
What I liked was the first phrase of the song "my cunt... ry tis of thee..." I don't think Brittany could have gotten away with that. I wonder if the networks are going to get fined by the FCC?

I hope Obama has some success. If he screws up it could be another great depression. I don't want some of his ideas to pass but I don't want complete failure.

The irony of this is that Obama has said time and again that he has no plans to change access to firearms. I guess when people are nourished by conspiracy theories they are also susceptible to conspiracy theories.

I swear, you and DP have been living under a rock. There was a poll taken just this week--THIS WEEK--and it said that while something like 80% support Obama, that same 80% also says they understand that things are going to get worse before they get better and that they're not looking for us to get anywhere near a recovery from the damage for at least two years. Putting it another way, there are always going to be people who see a president they like this way--plenty of Evangelicals saw Bush that way, and excusing everything he did, never questioning, blaming everyone but him for any failure of his polices and decisions. But, at least this time around, the amazing majority of people seem to understand that Obama is not going to work any miracles. If the poll is right, they seem to understand that he has a lot on his plate and it will take time for any changes to happen and that they're going to have to work for those changes as well.
This is the one thing people who see only the hype and ask only about the hype fail to understand. We actually need someone who can create hype--otherwise people won't have enough faith in him to pick up the buckets and help put out the fire. Which is the answer to your question.
What will happen after all the hype has quieted down? I sure as hell hope that each and every one of us will get to work helping Obama to put out the fire. If we don't, if we rely entirely on him, then any failure won't be Obama's fault, it will be ours. And it will mean, sadly for the us as a people, that Americans are lazy fucks only interested in cheering someone on, not in working together to save ourselves from our own mess.

I'm afraid that this is a "cutting off the nose to spite the face" situation. They'd rather he failed and the ship sank than that he succeeded and proved them wrong.
Ultimately, I'll be happy if Obama gets us out of this hole we all dug with his predecessor leading the way because Bush was oh-so-sure digging down was the way to China!
If we get out of the hole, I'll consider Obama's presidency a success. No need to get us back to big houses, monster trucks and wars we can't win but love to cheer on.
