Inappropriate Music (mildly political)

I am listening to a CD of German Brass Band music, the sort of music that is played in Bavarian Beer Gardens in summer.

Some of my German friends would be horrified, because that sort of music is associated with their equivalent of unreconstructed rednecks, male chauvinists and has overtones of Aryan racial purity. To me, it is just a pleasant change from other forms of music.

Some songs and marches are banned in modern Germany because they are associated with the Hitler regime. I can sing the Horst Wessell Leid in England. No one would understand it. If I sung it in Germany I would be arrested, even if I sung my late uncle's parody that made fun of SA and SS men. The tune is enough...

English fans singing 'Ten German Bombers' during the World Cup were insulting the host country.

What would be the reaction in Southern Lebanon if I played Hava Nagila?

There are hymn tunes that aren't appropriate for weddings. 'Fight the Good Fight' is probably an unwise choice.

What would be your suggestion for music in an inappropriate place?

'Nelly the Elephant' at a Republican convention? Or would 'The Internationale' be worse?

Any offers?

50 Ways To Leave Your Lover at a wedding?

Lots of songs come to mind as inappropriate at a wedding. In the "sorta hymn" catagory, "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition" comes to mind, as does the 40's big band hit "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine".

Of course, some of the tacky, drippy treacly fare played at weddings is nearly as bad.

The only song played at my wedding was Jethro Tull's "Solstice Bells" because we made our promises on the winter solstice.

In the American South, there are any number of traditional Songs that, sung in an inappropriate venue, will cause insult and outrage. Most anything by Stephen Foster, for instance.

Is Zip-A-Dee-Do-Da appropriate anywhere anymore, or is it just too politically incorrect because of its association with Song of the South?

Does Disney still put it on their albums and videos of songs from their movies?

Yes they do. I remember fondly the days when I was too young to get it...I loved that movie. I still don't think it's as bad as some others, but I understand why it's pretty much disappeared.

Kevin Federline songs at any event (unless Vanilla Ice opens for him, in which case it's obviously supposed to be funny).

HIM's Wings Of A Butterfly at church.
Smashing Pumpkins' Disarm at a church lock-in (it was appropriate given the situation though, and wehad locked the adults out of the sanctuary, we had all the keys, and there wasn't a damn thing they could do- we had control of the sound system)
A hymn called For Those Tears I Died anywhere around my grandparents- the woman who wrote it was the one who killed their son while driving drunk. She wrote the song after finding God. (At least, that's what I was told when I wanted to sing it as a teenager for my Easter solo.)
Bloodhound Gang's The Bad Touch at a priests' convention.
Brad Paisley and Alison Krause's WHiskey Lullabye at an AA meeting.

Really, I can keep going.

How about irony in the songs that really do get played at weddings? It wasn't played at mine, but for example...and really read the lyrics...this is NOT a positive love song!

Every Breath You Take
by The Police

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
Ill be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
Ill be watching you

Oh, cant you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
Ill be watching you

Since youve gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but its you I cant replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please...

Oh, cant you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every breath you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
Ill be watching you

Every move you make
Every step you take
Ill be watching you

Ill be watching you
Ill be watching you
Ill be watching you
Ill be watching you...

When the Queen danced with President Gerald Ford at the White House, the orchestra played, "That's Why The Lady Is a Tramp."

'Roll out the Barrel' at an AA 12-step meeting.

'Je t'aime, moi non plus' by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsborough at a DAR convention.

'Margate' by Chas and Dave in Blackpool.

Anything from Jesus Christ Superstar during a visit by the Pope.

Anything from 'CATS' at Crufts Dog Show.

'Rocking all over the World' by Status Quo at a Taleban Friday Prayer session, followed by 'We're in the Army Now.'

Any marches by Sousa or Glenn Miller on Iran's national radio station.

I have a copy of the movie. And I hate that song -- with reason. The chorus I sang with performed it multiple times because the version we had (pretty hammy) was a crowd pleasure. I never need to hear it again.

"Dueling Banjos" at the opening of the Special Olympics.

Dueling Banjos in any rural/isolated area, especially in the south.

Only time that would be appropriate is if you were trying to scare the living shit out of someone.

Lovex- Oh How The Mighty Fall at a political gathering. :D It wasn't intentional, I didn't realize they could hear my car radio all the way acros the field.

Dave Matthews- Crash Into Me when you're sitting outside a girl's house. (It's a great theme for a Peeping Tom.)

K's Choice- Not An Addict at a NA meeting. Also Low by Cracker.

I have a lot of inappropriate music, but the best ever is the Voltaire song Worf's Revenge (The Klingon Rap) at a Trekkie convention. For those who have never heard the song- I recommend that one, The Sexy Data Tango, and The USS Make Shit Up for entertainment value. Dead Girls is extremely inappropriate at any time, but especially at a mortician's convention. All are by Voltaire.

(Not that Voltaire. The OTHER Voltaire.)

Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" where a moshpit could be had.

Funeral songs when you have a child who won't sleep. My grandmother had two favourites that she used to sing to me when I was being awkward. One was "Abide with me" and the other was "There's a place for little children above the big blue sky."

 Thinking back on it, that could have fucked me up for life.

"All My X's Live In Texas" at a wedding. I went to a wedding where the "loving couple" danced to that. They broke up two weeks later
