In your element?

By the sea or lakes and mountains.

I've had enough of living in cities to last me a life time; I think London wore me out lol. Ok to visit but I life the outdoors, fresh air and natural beauty. Most of all I like being near water.....oceans or lakes

Are there environments where you are not comfortable?

I'm not happy ON the sea. I'm ok in it but that generally means by the shore but I get sea sick. Perhaps thats telling me something. Although I love the power and serenity of it. Its very relaxing.

I don't like heights yet love looking to the sky. fear that is getting worse the older I get.

I don't like getting burnt either. haha.

Hmm, just earth for me then

I love the ocean especially in the winter or very early morning before anyone else is there.

Swimming in the rough waves has a way of refreshing my soul. There have been difficult times in my life and after allowing myself to be tossed around in the waves a bit I have felt so much better.

Thanks to the military I have lived in desert, in suburbs, in cities, in the midwest, west, south and north and overseas. Now I live in a forest. But close enough to a small city and within hours of major cities. Most importantly I live close enough to ocean if I need "therapy"

I liked everywhere that I have lived for the most part except Florida. Too many bugs, too humid and at the time I lived too far out in the middle of no where. Never even want to go for a visit unless I have to visit relatives.

Being near the water touches my soul. I love that.

Being warm is important to me.

Being near a city that has enough fine art events that I can't get to them all is also important to me.

I live on the coast of Maine, and feel that it is the best of all worlds. The ocean is a short walk away, and the mountains but a short drive. And, when my mood is more cosmopolitan, I can easily go to Portland or to Boston.

Fire is my element. I HATE cold weather, but I don't mind sweating. Actually, I don't sweat that much, either, so I guess I don't only prefer fire, I'm physically adapted to it.

I'm infatuated with fire. Maybe I'm a pyro, I don't know. I used to LOVE taking out the trash to burn, when I was a kid, checking out the different items in the trash and how they looked when burning, etc.

And I have 3 sisters so I found out how flammable hair spray was long ago. I loved it when I'd toss a can into the fair and wait for it to explode. Ah, the good old days. I don't get to do that any more. I really enjoy watching flames, too. Wish I had a fireplace. Fire...great stuff!
You burned your own trash? Seriously? Where the heck is that legal?

I'm sure I would have loved that too, as a kid. I used to build model airplanes and then take them up to the attic, light them on fire, and launch them out the window. Also infatuated with fireworks, camp fires, homemade torches, etc.

I am never more at home than when I'm in a deep, green, lush forest, with creeks calling from somewhere over the next rise, and muted shafts of sunlight piercing the canopy. :)

that sounds wonderful. :)

a forest would be my ideal home environment too, one with small bodies of water nearby and with mountains in walking distance. 45 minutes to an hour outside a good-sized city would be good for the weekend nightlife and museum hopping, but no closer. some place with the 4 seasonal changes, but long on the colder months. i don't do well with heat or humidity, or glaring sunlight. sometimes i think i have the opposite of "SAD"...the warmer and brighter it gets, the more depressed and less energetic i am.

i actually do enjoy beaches too, but only those in cooler climate areas which border a forest...(say like in northern canada or alaska)...not what most people think of when they think "beach."

::::::ahem:::::Maine....

i grew up in the city, but moved out when i was 18. i have no urge to go back. i love small towns. old main streets, small art galleries, local coffee shops where you can get breakfast served by a woman who has never been anywhere else. i like to be able to get in my car and be in the country in 5 minutes. the smell of fresh air and the ability to see the stars at night is a must. i like being close to rivers. i need old bridges, rustic barns and quiet. i could never live in southern california or new york city. it would drive me crazy. i also love being in the desert. sunsets over the sand and cool cacti make me smile.

actually i've always wanted to visit coastal Maine, so good one. :) the only problem with Maine tho, is that seeing "Dolores Claiborne" gave me a really negative impression of the locals.

Believe it or not, I actually have a friend from out of state who will not visit me at home because she has read so much Stephen King that the very idea of coming to Maine scares her half to death. LOL.

I am a city person too... But I do like open places, but usually these are places that are special to me for one reason or another.

However, even though I am a city person, I am not a fan of the city I live in at the moment. If anywhere, I would live in NYC as I can't get enough of the place.

I have lived in the desert, in the mountains and in the forest. I have also lived on the water (the longest period without touching land being 120 days).

Of all the places I have lived, I think I like the one where I am right now. Under a mountain range with the sea in front of me. For some reason I feel comforted by the feeling that the mountains behind me are watching my back and guarding me. The sea has and always will be my primary love though. When I come home from being in the city, I sleep like a baby, listening to the sea sighing and breathing outside the window.

For me it's the sea. Preferably with a fairly hearty tide.

I spent the first 18 years of my life literally within spitting distance of the sea (my parents' garden gate opened onto the beach and I would be lulled to sleep every night by the sound of the waves).

Now, by deliberate choice, I live about 30 yards from the sea, albeit 250 miles from my parents' house.

Edited to add: some years ago I had therapy for severe clinical depression and the therapist asked me who or what in my life represented a benign, wise, protective, comforting force - someone or something that I could always turn to. I didn't even have to think about it - it was (and is) the sea.

I hate desert areas. I think they're ugly, and I don't do well in the heat. It gets over 80 and I can't eat or sleep and I throw up a lot.

The desert is actually my second favourite environment. Like the ocean, it is challenging and full of "secret life". I love the wide-open feeling and also the smallness one inevitably feels against such a formidable setting.

Oh, and Lance's messed up knees don't hurt so much in the desert. Nice and dry!

Back in the old days, lots of cool things were still legal. We had a cinder block thing for trash burning. Actually, it looked kind of like a chimney but not red bricks, cinder blocks.

It was always best to go out after dark because flames always look better then. And the sparks racing up into the sky until they burn out and well, it was just plain fun. I think it was my job from about 1962 until I moved out on my own and into the big city in 1971. I even got to burn trash then, too.

I'm not sure when it was stopped in my area, but I think it was in the late '80s or early '90s. To this day I look at my trash and think fondly of how some items would surely burn great.

I'm sure everybody knows what a zilch is, right? Well, maybe not, if you didn't get to burn the trash, when you were a kid.

Like the ocean, it is challenging and full of "secret life" that will kill you before you know it's there.

There. Fixed that.
