In regards to inspiration

So I was looking through Sexual Role-playing threads and I saw a story that, well, wasn't finished. I think it got four posts in and only one was RP.

But I really liked that post. To the point that a story kind of started unraveling in my head, and I wanted to put it down to type.

My question is, however, do I ask for permission? And if so, from who? The poster who's post I liked? Or the creator of the thread who set the scene? Are forum posts considered 'up for grabs' or is that just the story ideas board? What if I changed the characters/setting?

Technically, none of that has a legal copyright on it, unless I'm missing something.

But you're right, it's the proper thing to do. I've seen good ideas on this forum and I've asked if I could write it into a story. Sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes I get no reply.

In your case, I think depends how close the thread is to what you want to write. If it's very loosely related, don't bother. But if it's exactly what someone wrote on the forum, then it's proper etiquette to ask everyone whose ideas you plan on using.

If they don't respond, just write it anyway... :)

What if I changed the characters/setting?

If you changed the setting and some of the facts and so forth, don't bother asking for permission unless you want to.

Just look at movies, books, and music. Everyone gets inspiration from somewhere. Even big name movie directors are open about being inspired from movies they saw years ago.

If you're only taking elements of the idea and building your own story from it, you don't really need to ask permission. Adding a link to the thread as a credit for the inspiration in the opening notes of the story would be a polite gesture, though. Links to pages on Literotica are the only types of links that are allowed in a story.

If you're using a lot of what exists and simply expanding/ending the tale in progress, then I would imagine the proper protocol is to ask the thread starter, and any poster whose material you are either directly using or drawing from strongly for permission to use what they've written.
