Good morning my dear colleagues,
We write a lot about "writing" here, we write about the planning, the dreaded "writers block" and the other parts of the writing process that yield finished, approved and published works. Of course, that's what we're here for, to discuss the "craft of writing: tips, tricks, philosophies and styles" (It says so at the top!)

Part of those very discussions have centred around "breaks", "dry spells" and "step backs for a while", so, what do we all do to forget about writing for a while?

What do you find are good, wholesome (including rampant physical activities) and productive efforts to help you "clear" the fog?
Maybe there are others who might benefit from your suggestions, no?
Deepest respects,
D.

I'd like to say that I read a lot when I can't write. But the truth is that I mostly hang out in the AH, in between bouts of staring mindlessly at a page with four lines on it.

My first resort is to try to progress other stories, but for a complete break, I have a couple of go-to
computer games.

Hiking, yard work, anything outside weather permitting. Actually I'd rather be outside than write, maybe part of my problem. When I'm outside it's to empty my head not fill it by thinking about writing or how I'm going to pull a story/ scene off.

I always find that walking produces good creative ideas. But usually if I'm in a down period for writing I just have to wait for it to go away on its own.

I try to fall asleep, especially if I'm trying to fall asleep in a silent room. That's when my brain goes "oh no you didn't" and suddenly I have inspiration for something, whether it's the current story, a new one, or just....new anxieties that I may try to make a story just to shut them up.

Not that I get much writing done these days, but I do try to stay fairly active physically, socially and mentally, if just to stave off the effects of the ravages of time.
  • Running 5 miles every other day.
  • Participate in a sand volleyball league weekly.
  • Hang out with friends at least twice a month, either in-person or virtually.
  • Read at least one book a week, currently reading "The Emperor of Gladness" by Ocean Vuong.
  • Play video games, my current rotation consists of Balatro (Jimbo my beloved), Hades II and Slay the Spire.
