Carnivorous koalas.

But don't kid yourself. Normal koalas aren't the cuddly critters people think they are. Cue up some audio of the noise they make, and I dare you not to be freaked out. Apparently they're nasty, horrible sounding creatures with rotten dispositions, and long nasty claws. And the drop bear version . . . your nightmares aren't adequate to imagine their awfulness.

I wonder how they taste? I’m a member of Peta,( people eating tasty animals). That was one thing I liked from my time in the Army, meeting new people, drinking new drinks, and eating things that aren’t normally available in the good ole US of A.

Don't know about koalas but I liked kangaroo. Rather tasty.

I've seen it described as "like eating wombat marinated in disinfectant". Koalas live exclusively on eucalyptus so I expect there'd be a strong eucalyptus flavour.

Also, a lot of them have chlamydia, so you'd want to cook them thoroughly.

Which possibly doesn't help, wombat not being a traditional dish. Unless you eat at Roadkill Cafe, in which case it's probably meal of the day.

Apparently there's a strong similarity to the taste of Panda! And here you go - Hibachi Panda. Maybe this could be adapted for koala?

4 - 5 oz. Panda Sirloin Steaks (n.b. - smaller cuts may be substituted if larger Panda steaks are unavailable in your area)
4 tsp. Soybean Oil
8 Large Mushrooms - Sliced thick
4 dashes Salt
4 dashes Black Pepper

Heat nonstick skillet and add oil to heated skillet.
While skillet is warming, cut Panda steaks into one-inch cubes.
Place Panda steak cubes in skillet with mushrooms and cook until done to taste, stirring occasionally.
Season with salt and pepper if desired and serve hot with spicy chilli dipping sauce.

Also, a lot of them have chlamydia, so you'd want to cook them thoroughly.

In 1920 18 Koalas were introduced to Kangaroo island off the south coast of South Australia. They have now increased to about 30,000.

However, mainland losses have numbered in the millions. Until about 1932 some 250,000 per year were shot to supply the US hat trade. They seemed to withstand even that, but since 1940 millions of acres of trees have been cleared for arable farming and that has proved far more fatal than even shooting.

But as long as we're devouring the wildlife:

There's a tourist driving through the Top End. He doesn't allow for the heat and doesn't take enough water, so he's getting very thirsty, and after several dry hours he's very relieved to see a sign that says "Welcome to Mercy. Population 14."

He gets into town - such as it is - and there's one pub. He pulls in and walks inside, and there's an old lady at the counter with a face like a raisin and a voice like sandpaper. "Afternoon love, what are you having?"

"Water, please."

"Water's from the artesian. Not fit for drinking. All we have to drink is Koala Tea. But I'll warn you, it's a bit rough."

"Doesn't matter, I'll drink anything."

So he sits down, and she goes into the kitchen and comes back a few minutes later with a giant mug of tea. It stinks of eucalyptus and he can see that "Koala Tea" isn't just a brand name. There's a pair of furry grey paws gripping the rim of the mug, and he can see little fuzzy ears in the murky depths. He's thirsty, but this is too much.

"For the love of God, can you take this away and strain out the koala bits?"

She just looks at him with her hands on her hips and says, "The Koala Tea of Mercy is not strained!"

...I'll see myself out.

Roo is delicious, I cook with it often. I've also had crocodile, witchetty grubs, and green ants (surprisingly tasty!)

I'm thoroughly jealous of your ability to go back and edit and tweak, edit and tweak! I've finished my first draft and will probably start thinking about editing roughly 24 hours before it's due.

Status update. I just bounced American Girls Down Under back to my co-author, electricblue66, for his turn at the keyboard. We're up to 23k words, and we have three of the four essential scenes written. I think we have a good shot at makeing the Nov 5 deadline.

And last night, I actually finished my 'stupid big thing' which will now be submitted. So yes, a little interlude before bedtime, should work nicely.

I'm toying with the idea of a second submission. The main obstacle is that this idea is much larger in scope than I can hope to accomplish between now and the deadline. I don't want to use the idea unless I can do full justice to it.

Perhaps a shorter idea will come to me and I can knock out a 2-3 pager in time for the contest. If not, I will just have one submission (in which I am finding a small tweak every time I look at the damn doc).
