Why all this self-flagellation? America comes off pretty well compared to most of the world. The Arabs still have slavery. The South American banana republics and narcostates aren't exactly models of the Athenian democratic ideal. The Chinese are running gulags and a high-tech surveillance state. On my visits to the USA I've seen so much pessimism. Except from the people who think President Trump is going to squash the people they don't like and turbocharge the economy by tariffs and keeping out foreigners and trashing research institutions and letting measles epidemics spread . . . Those folks are looking forward to their idea of paradise!

Nothing wrong with "self-monitoring" (though that sounds more like a breast self-exam than anything else!) but so many seem to go the apocalyptic Paul Ehrlich route instead.
