This is not a How To thread, but I think it is important for all to read.

There are certain posters on this board, I being one of them, who have had our names copied so closely it's almost impossible to tell who is who by looking at the name.

However, looking at the post count and title is a way to be aware of who you're talking to.

Please, don't PM me unless you're sure it's me (been here over a year, have over 10,000 posts). My copycat has jsut over 100 posts at the moment, and a picture of me in his/her avatar.

Please, if you're not sure, don't PM me, I don't want my personal info going to other people.

Other names that have been copied are:

Mia62
(that are almost indescernable)
and

Bluespoke
LadyGuenivire

etc. Just take a look at post counts before you take to heart what people say, nowadays.

Indeed, I would suggest this crosses the line between free speech and being out of line. the moderators should do something about that, especially if they've ripped of your picture and our using it as an avatar. I'm 100% certain they cannot do that at least, not without your permission first.

I wonder if there is any way to safeguard our screen names? Perhaps by locking out any names that seem to be 'copycats'? That might be going beyond the abilities of the moderators, or infringing on free speech in some way...just an idea.

Protecting myself from having my identity ripped off is not a violation of free speech, in any way shape or form that I can see. I really don't like this whole situation, and I hope the people who run this site can come to a quick resolution.

I agree SuperShy . The forums rules have nothing in there that says anything even closely regarding it. Someone on the GB thought, I guess , that it was trite that I brought up the notion of identity fraud and theft of a name you have created . In Vixen's case ... she had a link on her profile somewhere and people were accessing something personal of hers that leads to security breaches and lack of privacy. What he is ( and yes it is a he and I know damned well who it is) doing is wrong , sick , and not at all amusing. Of course it is to him , but he is also doing it out of anger and needs to grow the hell up and get some help. I could go on and on and on. The moderators of THIS BOARD , the entire site need to get rid of him. If they do not , it won't end. Yes he has the right to all his mindless drivel and the tripe he keeps posting on the GB ... but cloning accounts and others nics is harmful , malicious and out and out wrong. You people need to step up and complain and get this asswipe off the damn site. He'll never stop.

Actually, is it a violation of free speech or an example of it? While I agree these trolls are a nuisance, assuming they're nothing more than that, they aren't doing any real harm. It's pretty easy to tell their posts apart from the 'real deal'. Post counts are almost sure fire, and the avatar copying can throw one off. Usually the writing style and presentation of posts is not up to par with the original's. The troll's is often shorter, consisting of the quality of a sixth grader.

If a troll is also stealing and manipulating information a user carelessly posted, that's another situation entirely. Correct me if I'm wrong, but parody of character is protected if the character is a public figure. Taking the character out of context (i.e, running around pretending Flawed-Ethics is a pedophile or something) is a violation. But these annoying posters aren't doing that, are they?

Again, correct me if I'm wrong. I usually don't take my time to read their posts, and am not up to snuff concerning libel. I just know Fawell lost to Flint.

The bottom line is, no matter what certain people on this forum do, the owners give you the "just put them on your ignore list" crap. This will be a fine test if there is anything short of posting kiddie porn you can do to get kicked off this site, because if this doesn't do it nothing will.

My problem is twofold:

1) the link in my copycat's sigline is into a passworded website, and it opens up the same way for that person as it does for me.. unpassworded.

That bothers me.

2) I have had people tell me that they almost PMed my copycat thinking it was me. My av, my name, almost indescernably different... what if someone was PMing personal info to me because they trusted me and it landed in the wrong hands? What if someone PMed my personal info like name and phone number clarification, etc?

It is a breach of my personal security. That is what bothers me.

AGAIN the ASSHOLES of the GB ruin a great fun site with their never ending abuse of peoples rights. This is exactly why I NEVER go to the GB anymore, I've seen wonderful people chased through the threads & boards making their time on LIT a misery rather than a fun one like it should be.

So you wouldn't mind someone sending the person impersonating you a PM talking about something very private , mistaking it to be truly you? That's what is happening. As I said on the GB , people have grown so accustomed seeing one another they don't always look carefully , and jumped to reply to a thread the jerk has made or quickly send a PM talking to them thinking them to be legit. And it disturbs me alot of persons laxness about what is going on.

I know what you're saying E . It's just very frustrating. I know who it is and it's very messed up. Short of getting rid of him ... he will never stop the crap that he is doing. Nor does he care who he hurts or causes harm. Sorry for being so bitchy ...

I do agree that this does truly suck, and it is a real problem to tell who is the right person and who is not, but I do have to add a couple of thoughts, none of which are very deep I must admit.

Does it truly matter? This is an unlimited free speach board, one of the greatest things about it is that anyone can say anything they so desire. While pathetic that people cannot even come up with an original name, much less an original thought I do not see how we could control the use of 'copycat' names without reducing the value of the board itself to near nothingness for fear that we will be the next target of censorship for not having something unique about ourselves or what we post.

Are we not just feeding the copycats ego by being upset? Copycat names have been a problem since long before the internet, even ancient painters had contemporaries that would create in similar style and sign the others name in order to increase its value. I used to opereate a small ISP a few years ago and had IRC servers that I ran as well. I saw many many instances of copycat names, people requesting bans, k-lines and other punishments and in most cases these were universally unreasonable and unable to enforce. It is irritating I know, while never here i have had my online identity 'borrowed' a few times and found it extremely distressing. I don't have a solution or a way to stop it, but remember that hte more upset you get, the more you voice your distaste for these pitiful creatures the more likely they are to infest the boards and bring their brand of dissention to what is supposed to be a fun and relaxing environment.


And with all that please read it and promptly remember that the sincerest form of flattery is imitation, ask any sucessful comedian.

Carnus has (as usual) made an excellent point. If you see one of these imposter posts and are aware it is as such, please DO NOT RESPOND to them, that is what these attention-starved fuckwits (whomever they are, and I could care less) want you to do.

The only response you write should be to the moderator of that board by clicking on "report this post to a moderator" which is right above the edit - quote buttons if you were unaware. Pay them no attention in public, and give the mederators word that this is unaceptable, and hopefully resolving this will not take long.

Just an FYI...

I was having a hard time - besides post count - trying to see HOW the names were different on some of them.... especially the ones with the weird i's... (mia62, Bob_Bytchin, vixenshe) An easy way to tell on them is to copy the names into notepad and then it's extremely obvious.
