especially you newer peeps:

make sure you have other copies, paper, online storage, here, wherever of all the stuff you have in your pc that you'd regret losing. well, poetry and stories and stuff - your porn stash is another matter!

Why? Computers break

I'm using a substitute machine right now, but all I need is what I have here and locked away in my e-mail accounts. Just as well. Learned my lesson last time, so this time the whole affair's a pain in the butt but no tragedy :D Not lost a thing. Yay.

I also have an external hard drive as a repository. Google has storage, as well as several other server inc.s Web blog servers and mail accounts are ephemeral but mail's
not as wonky as web logs so be sure to check your accounts often. Not checking was why I lost a LOT of my editred posts. <le sigh> I have the thread here and will likely copy it to a different back up soon. I do have everything on my ext. hard drive and some hard copies but it's very nice having them in one plac

Very true, had a book 99% done and was just starting to edit the sucker when I lost my computer. Lost the book and all my notes that went with it in one noisy moment when the hard drive crashed. Taught me to never put all my eggs in one basket.

you can never entirely trust any electronic storage, but if you've hard copies as well (and i really mean paper because even discs change format with the years) you're spreading the risk to make it almost negligible. I'm trying to remember if there's anything at all in my old hard drive i've not committed to paper or other places . . . hmmmn, i'll need to fire up the old girl and see if i can access any of my word-files to make sure. If there is anything, i'll copy it to paper before consigning her to the bin. Might give that a shot thursday. I'm almost 100% sure, though.

Unfortunately email accounts can go tits up as have two of mine in the past
true dat. *nods*

oh that really must have hurt! taught you a hard lesson you'll never forget.

I agree with having back ups and back ups for the back ups. I personally recommend having a friend or two you can trust and making sure they have a copy of your writing especially since you need to write an ungodly eamount before it's going to be eating up space on someones hard drive but paper gets wet, burns and in my case gets eaten by various pets, mostly the bunnyies we occasionally let run around but the iguanas seem to enjoy ripping paper up too.
