Since I was a kid certain future dates have always appealed to me, and I've waited for them with baited breath. Milestone moments of little or no real importance. The first date, of course, was in 1973 when I became an official "teenager", which was very important, especially coming out of the 60s. Another was the year 1984, because I had loved the book and wanted to see what the world would be like in the actual year. I couldn't believe when 1984 finally came and went.

Another date was New Year's Eve 1999, of course. I wanted to see that for a looooooong time.

And just recently I passed another milestone...my 40th birthday. It was more "looked forward to" than my 30th or 20th because I always felt that I would come into my own in my 40s, and because 40 and 2000 seemed like souch good round numbers, and felt soooo far away.

Now I realize I only have one more date that I'm looking forward to -- the year 2001, because of the damn movie of course.

Any future (or past) dates out there for you that have any silly or profound personal importance?

Dixon are you serious??? You're 40.

I know this is off the question but, no way are you 40.

DCL blazes a path into middle age.

Happy Birthday Dixon.

2005

That is the year I will turn 36. I feel much the same way about 36 as you do 40, I'm just a little less patient.

1990 was significant also. That was the year I turned 21, a total disappointment.

Happy belated birthday

Well no but, well but ... I dunno. Just not 40.

Wow, I thought you were in your early 30's, please don't take offense here.

By the way about your Date's, let ME ask YOU this ...

When you were growing up, did you always have those dates in mind?? By that I mean say in 1984 did you have 2000 in mind???

What I'm trying to say is that maybe after 2001, you might find another date that you find yourself waiting for.

I looked forward to 1996 (Feb) because my son was due then.

Oh wow DCL is 40 this shocks me sorta!! I didnt think you were like older than my mom, Hun. OH well Happy birthday sweetie kisses!!

Yeah, I did. That's the point. Because they've been in my mind since I was a kid they've achieved a sense of mythos not equal to the actual importance of the dates. They're only important to me because I've been thinking about them for so long.

And up until a few days ago I was in my 30s (albeit my late 30s). Don't start telling me that all those pent up sexual fantasies have vanished just because I'm "old". Heaven forbid!

I still feel 24.

Anyway, I don't mean to make this a birthday thread. Thanks for all your good wishes.

This is funny, because Manu and I were discussing the other day how we DON'T look forward to any dates anymore. Our 18 birthdays was a big one, as was our 21st's. The year 2000 is something I've been wondering about since I was in kindergarten (though somehow I thought I'd be OLD in Y2K - why, I have no idea :) ). Now, neither of us can think of any dates or years we're looking forward to. Weird.

Well then Dixon, I'm sorry but I'm more an age person.

I always looked forward to 17 and 23, not sure why just really looked forward to those ages, the year that I turned those ages didn't bother me just the age.

Now I look forward to reaching 36, which would be in 2007, so I guess I'm waiting for that now.

So your a Virgo??? Never saw you as a Virgo either.

Happy Birthday anyway :)

I'm just amazed at how time goes by faster and faster.

When I was 13 or 14, I couldn't wait to be an adult and now at 29, it seems like that was just the other day, and yet eons ago.

I don't look forward to any particular date in the future. Like some of y'all, I was more conscious of that years ago. I remember thinking by the time 2000 rolled around, we would all be zzzzzzzzipping around in Jetson mobiles and all of our houses would be high in the sky at the top of those poles.

The one thing that stands out is I can always remember which SuperBowl number the current one is because they are five years older than me.

Hope you had a good birthday, mon Deity! ;)

Dix????

Did you always "look forward" in a positive way - to turning 40? Or did you simply elevate that date to a personal "date of note?" I can't remember one birthday from the next and my 40th was no exception. And regarding negative or positive thoughts about birthdays - I think I'm balanced at this point - but leaning a little toward negativity. I still "feel" in my mind, much younger too and I actually look about 35 but the older I get, it's the little physical things, not necessarily outward aesthetic things - it's those minor aches and pains. They build and eventually they start to bring you into some negativity. At least that's my theory as to where I (and maybe we all) are headed. I simply don't look forward to more aches and pains.

Happy damn birthday - hope you have some fun planned.

Happy birthday, Dixon!

I can't think of any specific dates I'm looking forward to.
Events, maybe, but not dates. (ie. maybe someday I'll get a real job, get married, have a kid or two)

Right now I have the horrible feeling of being in limbo, of "killing time" until something happens.

I suppose I'm looking forward to my 30th birthday, because it's a nice round number and hopefully my life will have some direction by then.

Until recently I was looking forward to my 44th birthday, cause I was going to America to meet the friends I've made on this very board. But now of course that is not going to happen, that really sucks.

Happy 40th DCL, I hope you had a good one.

Carl.

Lordy Lordy Dixon's Forty!

all the best Dixon you young rascal you ...

hey nice name change Sally ... ;)

damn!!!!!!!!!!! almost seems a crime to be over 40...hmmmmmmmmm but wait I remember!!!!!!!! you can't trust anyone over 40

Dixon.... I was sure I would never reach my 40th birthday.... now that it is long gone, I really don't look for a certain date as much as events, my time is now measured in reaching my goals

Dixon Carter Lee:

My boyfriend just turned forty and my father seventy. My friend was not nearly as contemplative over the event as were his parents. He just felt he'd reach peace in his life and forty was no big deal. His parents were made to feel old. My father loved seventy, his children and grandchildren around him, his accomplishments to savor, (his regrets too though they were only mentioned in private). All in all, life is not what you make it but your perception. I tend to like people who understand that years produce wisdom......and youth produces idealsm. Both are such wonderful qualities.

I didn't have cause to think of the rest of your dates, but 1984......I spent the year thinking the world was going to change drastically.

Boo

Looking forward to it as well DC

However, I have to make 30 first!

I wanted a chance to convey my thanks to you. I have been reading most of your posts since I'd read the accolade that many of the ladies have heaped on you. Not stalking by any means but curious. You are a very insightful and kind person DC. If you continue on your path you may end up a wise and revered sage. I know I appreciate your point of view and apropeau (sp?) postings. Post of note:your supportive postings to Flagg.

Thanks again!! Here's to you!!

I looked forward to January 2, 1977, certainly.

I'm definitely looking forward to May 2001.

I'm also looking forward to my 50th birthday, in 2003.

There will always be other dates to look forward to; I suppose that's the way life is.

Happy birthday!

In a macabre kind of way....

I was looking forward to my 52nd birthday because I never expected that I would live that long. My father died before he made it to 52 and I figured that I would never make it, either. Since then, I have been looking forward to reaching the age of 59 1\2 when I can start dipping into my profit sharing plan and quit the practice of law. I hope I make it.

P.S. Happy Birthday, Dixon. 40 really is just another number. It only stops getting better when you have t stop counting.

Yeah DCL those were big dates - 1984, 2000, 2001 etc.

For a long time I have been tickled by 2025. It would be my father's 100th, and my eldest son's 40th. But it is also the date on which my driving licence expires ... when I first got one in 1972 the idea of it expiring in 2025 ... well it just seemed so unbelievably far away... a Sci-fi date yet connected directly to my own reality.

now 2025 is much more momentous to contemplate - on my 70th birthday I get to start smoking again and I am RELALY looking forward!

??? Your driver's license expires? As in you can't ever drive again, or you have to take a test again to show you can still drive?

And DCL- welcome to the over 40 group. I like it so far- much more freedom because you care less about some things, and care more about others. Perception shifts from when you were in your 30's and for me, that is a good thing.

I have a big one coming up on Sunday. I will be 45.

Knowing that I would be 45 in the year 2000 always had a fascination for me. I always thought that I would be too old for anything at 45.

Now, I find that this is the most exciting and stimulating time in my life. Some fundamental changes have me feeling like a kid again, and looking forward to my next 45 years!

you and me too SDkibum.

and Cheyenne - in the UK your driving license is good till you are 70; then you have to reapply demonstrating you are not yet clinically blind, dead or certifiable .... judging by some of the over 70s I see on the roads, it isn't too hard to pass!
