This news hit the UKs Headlines this morning and the following was in my e-mail from a friend this evening. As far as I can tell the story is true so I'm passing it on for anyone interested...

Oyster Sauce Dear All

High levels of a cancer-causing chemical have been found in Chinese sauces used in many kitchens. Health Canada is investigating after British authorities ordered stores to clear the shelves of Amoy Oyster Sauce because it contains dangerous levels of the carcinogenic chemical 3-MCPD. The sauces, including the hugely popular Lee Kum Kee oyster and soy sauces, contained as much as 3,000 times the recommended amounts of the chemical.

In Hong Kong, manufacturers Amoy Food and Lee Kum Kee said they planned to solve the problem by changing the recipe by the end of the year. Amoy said it has stopped supplying its oyster sauce to the European Union until the recipe is changed, but it will not withdraw the sauces from sale elsewhere.

Amoy and Lee Kum Kee have been around for generations. They are the Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola of Chinese sauces," said Victor Wong of the Vancouver Association of Chinese Canadians.

I M P O R T A N T

Please inform all at home, friends, relatives and families that the
following soya sauces are banned with immediate effect.

1) AMOY SOYA SAUCE, and
2) PEARL RIVER BRIDGE SOYA SAUCE. (applies for both Dark & Light Superior Soya Sauces)

Both soya brands are contaminated with CANCER causing CHLORINE.

Please pass the message around ..... that is if u care.

I just caught this before it fell...

...off the Board.

It's worth one more run through for those who haven't read it yet.

The story is genuine and the Health Authorities in the UK are now investigating other type of Chinese food.

As the ban does not include the USA be careful what you're buying and eating (especially in Chinese Restaurants - ask the name of the Soya sauce for a start).

Like Global Warming...

please, not alarmism, my god I have spent a lot of time in China and I have reached advanced middle-age and neither Chinese or American cuisine has done me in.

Now I understand if you eat French, or Italian that you must drink a lot of red wine...

It's those damn sneaky chinese, trying to poison us because we won't subvert to their evil communist ways.

*Tosses her bottle of wine behind a chair and hides the glass.*

Wine? WINE? WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

whazzup,

the best stew I ever had was in Beijing before the Opera and I was so hungry for Western food, that the chef had to come tell me there was no more...

God it was sooooo good!
