Fired former Trump White House chief of staff Reince Priebus has revealed what the president’s main impeachment defense will be starting next week when he is tried for the high crimes and misdemeanors of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

That’s literally going to be the summation of all the allegations against a sitting president of the United States of America, the supposed leader of the free world.

Conrad Black writes on the American Greatness web-site that since the legal case is nonsense and the outcome foreordained, impeachment is only a public relations battle now. The Democratic Party created this trap for themselves; they should now be allowed to take the consequences when that trap snaps closed on them.

The opposition to impeachment has drifted gradually toward the president’s side, so the wall-to-wall Democratic bias of almost all the national media has failed to hold back the tide of perception that these charges are legal and constitutional nonsense.

For any reader who has been in a submarine or outer space or Antarctica for the last six months, the charges are abuse of office and contempt of Congress. The first is NOT grounds for impeachment unless specified as treason, bribery, or another high crime or equivalent misdemeanor - and none such is alleged. As for the second charge, the only thing the president is actually guilty of is contempt for Schiff, Nadler, and Pelosi for running a rigged partisan mudslinging operation where the president received none of the protections accorded to defendants by the Bill of Rights!

Ken Starr will end up being a nightmare for Trump during the Senate impeachment trial: Ex-solicitor general

On Saturday’s edition of MSNBC’s “AM Joy,” law professor and former acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal walked through the problems with President Donald Trump’s impeachment defense team, which includes such notable names as former anti-Clinton independent counsel Ken Starr and retired Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz.

“I’m not going to like join the chorus of those who say because Trump has hired Epstein’s lawyers, that’s somehow bad,” said Katyal. “I think it’s dangerous thing in this country to attack the lawyers for the clients that they’ve represented in the past. We don’t want to incentivize great lawyers not to take hard cases because of fear of personal attacks later.”

“I think if I were Trump, I’d be worried about hiring Ken Starr because of all the things Starr said 20 years ago,” continued Katyal. “For example, he said that President Clinton abused executive privilege, and, therefore, should be impeached and removed from office for it. And what everyone thinks about what Clinton did, it’s nothing compared to the executive privilege abuses of Trump, I mean, that’s a hundred times worse and on steroids. So it’s just a hard thing, because every time Starr tries to mount a defense of Trump, he’s going to be confronted with Ken Starr from 20 years ago.”

“With respect to Dershowitz, his defenses are frankly silly,” continued Katyal. “Yesterday he went on TV and said abuse of power is not an impeachable offense. I don’t think you’ll find anyone to agree with that view, it is what impeachment is about. If you have any doubt, look at what a congressman in 2008 said. He said, what a high crime and misdemeanor is, it’s when a president puts his personal interest above those of the American people. That congressman in 2008 was Mike Pence.”

“Clearly, Lev Parnas liked to take pictures with a lot of people,” said Bondi unconcernedly. “He showed up at events pretty much everywhere where Republicans were.”

Of course that's how he gained visibility in that environment.

Asked about Trump’s relationship with Parnas, she added, “I don’t know what that matters, what they’re planning on doing with it. We’re going to stick to the facts and stick to the law in this case.”

Bondi and Trump’s association goes back years. She attracted national attention in 2016 after she dropped her state’s investigation into the fraudulent Trump University, right after soliciting a $25,000 campaign donation from the then-presidential candidate.

On MSNBC Saturday, a panel of legal experts tore into former Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz’s argument that abuse of power is not an impeachable offense, which anchor Joy Reid played for them in a clip.

It is an absurd comment,” said former federal prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks, to laughter around the table. “It is the standard by which we have impeached in the past. If you listen to the witnesses at the House, three out of four said that is an impeachable offense. The articles against Richard Nixon included abuse of power. It is clearly what was intended by our framers. It’s what the Federalist Papers say, and it’s the thing that makes sense. Other high crimes and misdemeanors are exactly that. It isn’t under the federal statutes that they were talking about. Bribery isn’t under the federal statute because there was no federal bribery crime when the Constitution was passed. It was whatever people thought it was.”

Chris Wallace grills Lindsey Graham over rigged Senate trial: ‘This is just a rush to get this over'

Fox News host Chris Wallace called out Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) for complaining that the House of Representatives had rushed the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

Graham argued that the president’s executive privilege claim would prevent former National Security Adviser John Bolton and others from testifying.

“If we call one witness, we’re going to call all the witnesses,” Graham insisted. “There’s not going to be a process where the Democrats get their witnesses and the president gets shut out.”

Former White House counsel for Richard Nixon, John Dean, explained that the legal brief out of President Donald Trump’s White House was so bad that it had to have been dictated by Trump himself.

Saturday evening, Trump’s legal team, chaired by Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow and White House counsel Pat Cipollone, filed their own form of a legal brief that responded to the case filed by Democrats ahead of Tuesday’s impeachment trial.

The document called the proceedings “constitutionally invalid” and claims House Democrats are staging a “dangerous attack” with a “brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and interfere with the 2020 election.”
