Now imagine having to give 1,317,300 back in taxes.....Yep that would suck.

61%!

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Thanks to his recent wins at both The Open Championship and the Scottish Open, Phil Mickelson pocketed more than $2.16 million in just two weeks.

The world’s top golfer —who came under fire earlier this year when he complained about his supposed 60 percent tax rate as a California resident — is taking another hit on his recent earnings.

According to Forbes, Mickelson has been subjected to the United Kingdom’s 45 percent tax rate for those who make more than £150,000 a year. In addition, the magazine reports, he will be taxed on a portion of the endorsement income he earned during his time in Scotland.

While Mickelson can take a foreign tax credit to avoid being taxed again by the U.S. government, he still has to pay self-employment taxes, the new Medicare surtax, and hand over 13.3 percent of his wages to the state of California, which does not have a foreign tax credit, Forbes reported.

Forbes estimates he will take home $842,700, which, of course, does not include any of his tax-deductible travel expenses and the additional 10 percent he owes to his caddy.

Mickelson is sponsored by KPMG, which manages an official Twitter account for his signature hat and is now refurbishing a school library in Orange County

He's not the best, he just thinks he is.

For two weeks he was the best at what he does. Of all time? He is top ten. His own aggressiveness has cost him top 5 so far, but it is that aggressiveness that makes him one of the best players to watch..IMO. When all is said and done, he could end up top 5. Say 3 or 4 more second place finishes at the US and one more Masters.

The thing I think it says is that if you work hard to get the best at what you do why should so much of it. Over half be taken away to help a government that is just going to waste it. There has to be some reform.

His faulty play has been attributed to aggressiveness. It's just plain dumb shots that everyone tries to excuse. He's only good because his long and mid game is good. His short game is just fucking awful. Sometimes I think he should be kicked off the tour for playing so bad inside of 20 yards.
Fuck him and his taxes.

Genius out of bunkers, basically invented the flop shot. You're fucking harsh.

Did someone put crack in your cheerios?

Since moving to the claw grip his putting has improved dramatically.

Excluding putting, experts put his short game in the top 10 of all time.

Look at his sand saves and scrambling stats.... He is in the top 5 every year.

Johnson, Donald, Day, and Gay are the only players I would rank higher currently on the tour.

his golf game? he didn't build that.

The thing is ultimately HE DIDN'T. You do realize this right?

Here's what Vat is leaving out and what you intentionally ignore.

He didn't invent the game. It's been around for longer than he's been alive.
He didn't build the prestige of the game. In modern times that undoubtedly goes primarily to Woods but even discounting both of them there are years and years of history.
He doesn't own a television station, sell shaving gel, cleats, balls, clubs, DVDs, Video Games, T-shirts etc etc etc. Do you think there WOULD be a two million dollar pot for him to win in the first place without the millions and millions of viewers at home buying shit that allows sponsors to fund people playing a game?

So perhaps instead of imagining winning two million dollars and giving back over half (if that's even true) perhaps you should imagine being the best in the world at what you do and the only thing you get is the satisfaction of being the best at what you do. You don't have to give back half, in fact you can't give back anything at all of that.

He didn't invent the game. It's been around for longer than he's been alive. So He should create a time machine and go back to give some Scottish sheep herder who got tired of fucking his flock some money?

Ok, So he should give a cut to the club/ball manufactures and the TV stations. But then they should give a share of their profits to him right? I think he would be OK with that

Seems the only thing I am missing here is exactly how the governments deserve 61%

The man has thrown away countless wins due to his short game. Coming around late in the game to finally figure things out doesn't cut it. He had years to do that and didn't. Now everyone wants to say he's one of the best. The best don't wait until they can see the senior tour on the horizon before they decide to play right.

He can get off the beach but he can't (or couldn't) putt his way back into it after that. Fuck him and his fake ass leftie bullshit.

it was a rhetorical question, and yet you still managed to botch it.

40 plus victories and you call him a Phil-come-lately? Your standards are tough, I mean ridiculous.

He's not helping the government, he's using it & being charged.

It's all measured by majors. He choked for how many years?
Guys at that level don't get to choke.

Tiger has been choking up a storm lately. Palmer did. I could go on. I get it, you hate Phil. Cool.

And I've made mention of Tiger choking. Just when you think he's making a comeback he decides to throw it away. I give him some slack because I get where it's coming from but that's it.
I don't mention Palmer for the same reason I don't mention Nicklaus or Bobby Jones. Different eras, different game, different competition. The only modern player who gets mentioned with those names is Tiger and that's only because of number of wins. Otherwise they simply don't compare. No way to tell how any of them would do if they all played at the same time.

To the OP, Phil has made $49M this year so far. He does not need your empathy.

I don't understand that at all.
