Image-based search

Is there an application or website out there that will perform an image-based search? There are several images that I've saved from avatars here that I'd like to see in a larger form than that in which I currently have them. The only way to do this would be to find the original source - but these are from a long time ago and were posted by folks who no longer frequent Litland.

I haven't had much luck with Google, but then maybe my brain is frozen or something.

Any ideas?

Given the technical problems of matching a cropped an shrunken avatar sized image file against a full-screen (or larger) image file -- especially JPeG format files -- I seriously doubt that you're going to find anything affordable; if anything does exist, it's going to be in the governements only price range.

The only thing that I could sujest is to maybe try a google search and list a discription of what is IN the picture and MAYBE you could find it... Some times I do that myself.. it works about 50% of the time, it is just very time consuming and you have to try several different word options.. Good luck!!

Thanks....I needed to hear that just after paying my taxes. :D

I can see where the problem is exactly as you described it: a zillion variables to be consolidated and then when you add in the differences in the files due to image size....yep, problems ahoy!

I might give this a try, thanks.

It's worse than that -- save the exact same image twice in JPeg Format and you'll get two files that are 99% different to a binary file compare program. Uncompressed, the two images would be only 80-90% similar because of the quality loss inherent in the JPeG file format.

There's some way of doing it, since the larger stock photo houses (like Corbis) have ways of searching the net to see if anyone is stealing their images, regardless if they are cropped/altered/etc.

Not sure if anything is available for consumers though.

Did you save the Av size pictures? I have a collection of the ones I like, maybe I can help. Although a lot of them are stored on an external hard disk that probably crashed. If you would have the small size pics and would post them here maybe others will know the origin?

That only works for "watermarked" or other images with embedded identification data. They don't search for matching images, they search for images that have their watermark.
