I don't disagree with you in principle. The big difference, it seems to me, is that it could be more difficult to discern the asshats from the good prospects when you meet only online, particularly for someone who is just beginning his or her exploration.

I would say that depends on the person involved. Asshats are everywhere and not exclusive to online communities. Of course, there are more people expressing their asshat nature when enjoying the internet anonymity.

Personally I have a good asshat inbuilt detector but then I am not looking for much anymore but some fun now and then. I can imagine it may be hard for somebody with less experience and more expectations though.
