Not surprising. As he said in his announcement, it's not fair to his people to have them campaign on his behalf if the outcome is foreordained.
Trump will be the nominee. It won't matter if he's convicted and the court attempts to sentence him to prison, he'll still be the nominee. Further, the only way he won't get reelected is if there are some major shenanigans from the D's because he's going to win by a blowout.

Excellent argument here that Desantis should be forced to carry his campaign to full term...
He is a racist and a retread George Wallace wannabe. He never stood a chance because for one, it isn't the Jim Crow segregated 1950's anymore, and for two, most Americans here in the 21st Century didn't want to live in a Jim Crow-era segregated neo-Apartheid society anymore. Florida is Florida, and he may have the active support of the KKK and their followers, but the rest of the nation, even the conservative parts, were turned on by his overt racism and hate.
As for Trump, he may be the nominee if he isn't disqualified (As he should be, according to the Constitution) but he will NOT be legally elected again. Why? Because he was legally elected- once- and the majority of Americans quickly realized what a shit show that was, and hence, he was not re-elected in 2020. So it follows that he won't be reelected in 2024 either. Especially with his threats to turn America into an autocratic dictatorship- he will likely lose by an even bigger margin than before, despite Biden's current unpopularity.

DeSantis' whole schtick seems to have been that he was Trump without the drama. What he fundamentally failed to understand is that the deplorables love the drama!
I think as bad as Trump was, DeSantis's racism was far more overt, far more blatant, and far more a cornerstone of his social policies.
Trump was more about "Give me more power, more wealth, and more authority, and I don't give a fuck about anybody else" whereas DeSantis was more about "I hate blacks, gays, women, and minorities so I'm gonna do all I can to screw them over."

I agree. With Trump, it was really always just about him, and he saw what sold with the deplorables. DeSantis, whether he really believed in what he said or not, was obviously aware of what it all meant. I don't know if he really believed in it or if he was only trying to out-Trump Trump (he definitely was doing that, I'm just not sure if that was all there was to it), but IMO it doesn't matter.

Whether it’s Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina or Herman Caine to Nikki Haley - these candidates only serve as band aid cover for the abhorrent views of a party. There are too many misogynistic and racist men, like these 2 yukkin it up above, in the Republican Party for these candidates to gain traction outside the initial primaries. Sadly, the candidates know this, but the tv appearances and speakers fees from their race and gender tap dancing help soothe lacking integrity.
