For quite some time I've played around with the idea of buying a webcam. Now I decided ondoing so.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what I should look for? I don't want to spend a fortune, I don't need a million extras, maybe just some things I have to look for?

Also, do you know if todays models will work with Windows 98? Because a lot of USB devices seem to need Windows 98 Second Edition at the least.

Anyone can suggest something?

For plug'n'play installation, yes. Most models are provided with drivers for those who dont have that.

Here is a good one that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg:

And this one is really cheap, and works with Win95 even. But it's performance is not dazzling. OK for most regular use though.

I got a webcam sent to me free from my DSL provider one day a couple years ago. I had Windows98, and I could never get the thing to work, and I don't know why. I finally gave it away.

Yes, when you get it, you need to let me watch whatever it is you're doing. :)

That could be arranged. I'll let you know when I got it.

Oh and you other guys. Thnx for the advice. I'll keep looking for a logitech cam then. And I'll have to see if it says it works with Win98 specifically.

So what do you think is a fair price-range for a solid-performance camera?

Wouldn't pay more than 30 EUR, and there are many good ones cheaper than that.

Ditto

I'll even let you see me back, although mine is cheap and cheerful, it works okay :)

Beware of what promises you make, because I'll definitely be getting back to you. :)

I might get one on tuesday even. I got the money, and now if I find a suitable cam and the time, I'll be on my way.

ok, even though there was a Logitech suggested, I got a Creative Labs cam, and so far I think I like it.

It was a little more expensive, but it was the only model they had, that definitely worked under Win98. So, I'm pretty ecited....

I have a creative labs one and I'm quite happy with it.

Well, it works pretty fine and it also came with a headset. :)

The only thing that sucks is, there is no good programme to just record audio. And the windows audiorecorder sucks --> background noises/statics, whatever.

Mine came with a mic and my mic never worked, but I think that's my Soundblaster Audigy soundcard that causes the problem.
