Cyrus Jones 1810 to 1913
Made his great grand children believe you could live to a hundred and three
A hundred and three is forever when you're just a little kid
so Cyrus Jones lived forever

Muriel Stonewall 1903 to 1954
She lost both of her babies in the Second Great War
Now you should never have to watch your only children lowered in the ground
I mean you should never have to bury your own babies

When you dig my grave
Could you make it shallow
So that I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

Ring around the rosies
Pocket full of posies
Ashes to ashes
We all fall down

When you dig my grave
Could you make it shallow
So that I can feel the rain

Wharf Rat
Grateful Dead

Old man down, way down down, down by the docks of the city.
Blind and dirty, asked me for a dime, a dime for a cup of coffee.
I got no dime but I got some time to hear his story.
My name is August West, and I love my Pearly Baker best more than my wine.
More than my wine - more than my maker, though he's no friend of mine.

Everyone said, I'd come to no good, I knew I would Pearly, believe them.
Half of my life, I spent doin' time for some other fucker's crime,
The other half found me stumbling 'round drunk on Burgundy wine.

But I'll get back on my feet again someday,
The good Lord willin', if He says I may.
I know that the life I'm livin's no good,
I'll get a new start, live the life I should.
I'll get up and fly away, I'll get up and fly away, fly away.

Pearly's been true, true to me, true to my dyin' day he said,
I said to him, I said to him, "I'm sure she's been."
I said to him, "I'm sure she's been true to you."

Got up and wandered, wandered downtown, nowhere to go but just hang around.
I've got a girl, named Bonnie Lee, I know that girl's been true to me.
I know she's been, I'm sure she's been true to me.

LOOSE CHANGE
(Bruce Springsteen)

Met her at a friendly little bar down along the coast
She said it was her birthday so we had us a nice little toast
Drove around for a while, smoked a few cigarettes
Took her back to my place, she slipped off her party dress
She sat for a while on the edge of the bed just talkin'
Loose change in my pocket
Loose change in my pocket

Pint of gin in my boot cuff, I'm drivin' for a drink and a dance
Sittin' on the next stool, miss a little time on her hands
Yeah I knew she was trouble, but trouble sure was lookin' fine
And when I pulled her close what I knew kinda slipped my mind
We lay in bed and watched the moon come up crawling
Loose change in my pocket
Loose change in my pocket

I pour another drink, wait for the night to get through
Stars are burning in that black void so far away and blue

Now I'm sittin' at a red light I feel somethin' tickin' way down
The night's moving like a slow train crawling through this shithole town
Got my bags packed in the back and I'm tryin' to get going again
But red just goes to green and green goes red and then
Then all I hear's the clock on the dash tick-tocking
Loose change in my pocket
Loose change in my pocket

JOOLS AND JIM
(Pete Townshend)

Anyone can have an opinion
Anyone can join in and jump
Anyone can pay or just stay away
Anyone can crash and thump

But did you read the stuff that Julie said?
Or little Jimmy with his hair dyed red?
They don't give a shit Keith Moon is dead
Is that exactly what I thought I read?

Typewriter tappers
You're all just crappers
You listen to love with your intellect
A4 pushers
You're all just cushions
Morality ain't measured in a room
He wrecked.

Anyone can by some leather
Ain't no better than wearing sheep
anyone can sell lucky heather
You can see that words are cheap!

But did you read the stuff that Julie said?
Or little Jimmy with his hair dyed red?
They have a standard of perfection there
That you and me can never share

Typewriter bangers on
You're all just hangers on
Everyone's human 'cept Jools and Jim
Late copy churners
Rock and Roll learners
Your heart's are melting in pools
Of gin

But I know for sure that if we met up eye to eye
A little wine would bring us closer, you and I
'Cos your right, hypocrisy will be the death of me
And theirs an I before e when your spelling ecstasy
And you, you two......

Did you hear the stuff that Krishna said?
Or know for you that Jesus' blood was shed?
Is it in your heart or in your head?
Or does the truth lie in the center spread?

Anyone can have an opinion
Anyone can join in and jump
Anyone can pay or just stay away
Anyone can crash and thump

INTO THE FIRE

The sky was falling and streaked with blood
I heard you calling me, then you disappeared into the dust
Up the stairs, into the fire
Up the stairs, into the fire
I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher
Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love bring us love

You gave your love to see, in fields of red and autumn brown
You gave your love to me and lay your young body down
Up the stairs, into the fire
Up the stairs, into the fire
I need you near, but love and duty called you someplace higher
Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love bring us love

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love bring us love

It was dark, too dark to see, you held me in the light you gave
You lay your hand on me
Then walked into the darkness of your smoky grave
Up the stairs, into the fire
Up the stairs, into the fire
I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher
Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love bring us love...

May your love bring us love

And you learn that love, true love, Always has joys and sorrow, Seems ever present, Yet is never quite the same, Becoming more than love and less than love, So difficult to define. And you learn that through it all, You really can endure, That you really are strong, That you do have value.

When love is your greatest weakness, you will be the strongest person in the world.

-- Garman Wold

Something told me it was over
When I saw you and her talkin'
Something deep down in my soul said, 'Cry, girl'
When I saw you and that girl walkin' around

Whoo, I would rather, I would rather go blind, boy
Then to see you walk away from me, child, no

Whoo, so you see, I love you so much
That I don't wanna watch you leave me, baby
Most of all, I just don't, I just don't wanna be free, no

Whoo, whoo, I was just, I was just, I was just
Sittin here thinkin', of your kiss and your warm embrace, yeah
When the reflection in the glass that I held to my lips now, baby
Revealed the tears that was on my face, yeah

Whoo and baby, baby, I'd rather, I'd rather be blind, boy
Then to see you walk away, see you walk away from me, yeah
Whoo, baby, baby, baby, I'd rather be blind...

ALL THE WAY HOME
(Bruce Springsteen)

I know what it's like to have failed baby
With the whole world lookin' on
I know what it's like to have been so sure
Wake up and find it all gone

Now you've got no reason to trust me
And tonight my confidence is a little rusty
It's getting late
And if you don't feel leavin' alone
Well maybe I can walk you baby
All the way home

Our old fears and failures
Well they do linger (oh yes they do)
Like the shadow of that ring
That was on your finger
Well those days darling,
Those days are dead and gone
Oh I could walk you baby
All the way home

Now there's things no one can rearrange
We both have yesterdays that we can't change
It's closing time - bartender's ringing last call
These days I don't stand on pride and
I've learned how to take a fall
Now the time has come
And if your first choice - he's gone
Well that's alright baby
'Cause I can walk you all the way home
All the way home
All the way home

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May
And summer's leaves hath all too short a date

But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of thou fair thou owest
Nor Shall death braggeth though wandereth in its shade
When in eternal lines to time thou growest
And so long as men can breathe or eyes can see
So long lives this and this gives life to thee

William Shakespeare

If You Don't Want Me
(Warden/Emory Gordy,Jr.)

Never really felt like I belonged
Just about that time, you came along
Lead me to expect, your love and your respect
But lately you don't let those feelin's show
I don't really want somebody else
But I won't be your prize upon a shelf
I'd rather feel this emptiness
Than be something you possess
If you don't want me
Let me go

Can't we both admit
We made the most of it
And we were wrong
Don't you realize
The best years of our lives
Will soon be gone
If you hold on

I know there must be more to life than this
Neglected vows wrapped in a token kiss
Lonely and ignored
I can't take it anymore
If you don't want me
If you don't love me
If you don't want me
Let me go

A MASTER’S PRIDE

MANY SUBMISSIVE’S HAVE CROSSED MY PATH
SOME HAVE STAYED TO LISTEN AND TO LEARN
THERE IS JUST A FEW I REMEMBER BY NAME

THEN THERE ARE THE ONE’S WHO CAME ONLY TO PLAY GAMES
ONE DAY WHILE I WAS SITTING IN A ROOM AND CHATTING
MY EYES CAME UPON A LASS DIFFERENT THEN THE REST
SHE KNELT IN THE ROOM AND I HEARD A VOICE SO SOFT

"MASTER MAY I COME CLOSER AND KNEEL AT YOUR FEET"
I LOOKED HER WAY AND SIMPLY NODDED
"MASTER MAY A GIRL TAKE YOUR HAND IN HER’S"
ONCE AGAIN I SIMPLY NODDED
THEN MY EAR’S WERE SHOCKED AT WHAT THIS MASTER HEARD

"MASTER I HAVE SEARCHED FOR SUCH A LONG TIME"
"TO FIND A PROPER MASTER THAT WOULD TAKE MY HAND IN HIS"
"I COME TO YOU FOR GUIDANCE AND TO KNEEL HERE AT YOUR FEET"
"I PROMISE TO BE SILENT WHEN EVER YOU DECIDE TO SPEAK"

MY EYES LOOKED DOWN AND LOCKED WITH HER’S
SO SOFT, SO BRIGHT, SO SWEET
A FEELING WASHED OVER ME AS SHE KNELT THERE AT MY FEET
I TOOK HER HAND IN MINE AND SAID "WALK WITH ME A BIT"
AS I STOOD SO DID SHE AND HER EYES NEVER LEFT MINE

I HEARD THESE WORDS COME FROM MY MIND AND WALK ACROSS MY LIPS
"WILL YOU WALK THIS PATH WITH ME AND LEARN WHAT I CAN TEACH"
"FOR THIS JOURNEY MAY TAKE A LIFETIME AT MY FEET"
"DO YOU HAVE THE PATIENCE TO STAY WITH ME THAT LONG"
"ARE YOU WILLING TO SHARE YOUR LIFE AS I SHARE MINE WITH YOU"
THEN MY HEART WAS HAPPY WITH WHAT I HEARD HER SAY

"MASTER I HAVE A GIFT A SPECIAL ONE I THINK"
"I HAVE CARRIED IT VERY LONG ON THIS PATH OF SEARCHING"
"AND IF YOU WILL ALLOW ME I WOULD OFFER IT TO YOU"
I STOOPED AND LOOKED AS SHE KNELT AND LOWERED HER EYES FROM MINE
AND LISTENED MUCH TO MY SURPRISE ALL SHE HAD TO SAY

"MASTER I OFFER YOU MY HEART TO HOLD AND LOVE AS YOU WILL"
"MASTER I OFFER YOU MY SOUL IN HOPES YOU WILL WISH TO JOIN IT TO YOURS"
"MASTER I OFFER YOU MY BODY IN OBEDIENCE IT WILL OBEY"
"MASTER I OFFER YOU MY MIND IN WHICH YOU MAY FILL WITH YOUR KNOWLEDGE"
"MASTER I SUBMIT TO YOU IN ALL THINGS AND ALL WAYS"
"I HOPE THIS GIFT OF MY SUBMISSION TO YOU IS ALL I HOPE IT WILL BE"
I LOOKED AT HER WITH PRIDE TO THIS DAY HAS NEVER DIMINISHED

THESE WORD’S CAME FROM MY LIPS THAT DAY
"I ACCEPT THIS GIFT IN LOVE AND WILL HONOR IT WITH PRIDE"
"I WILL TAKE ALL THAT YOU HAVE GIVEN ME AND KEEP IT ON OUR JOURNEY"
"THIS TOKEN I PLACE ABOUT YOUR NECK IS MY PROMISE"
"THAT ALL YOU ASK AND SO MUCH MORE WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU"
TO THIS DAY I HAVE NEVER LOST LOVE OR PRIDE FOR MY "SWEET SIGH"

Melissa
Allman Brothers Band

Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast

Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow havin' fun,
But back home he'll always run
To sweet Melissa... mmm...

Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the Gypsy's name

No one hears his lonely sigh,
There are no blankets where he lies.
In all his deepest dreams the Gypsy flies
with sweet Melissa... mmm...

Again the morning's come,
Again he's on the run,
Sunbeams shining through his hair,
Appearing not to have a care.
Well, pick up your gear and Gypsy roll on, roll on.

Crossroads, will you ever let him go? (Lord, Lord)
Will you hide the dead man's ghost,
Or will he lie, beneath the clay,
or will his spirit roll away?

But I know that he won't stay without Melissa.

Yes I know that he won't stay without Melissa.

An appropriate one for this thread...

LUST FOR ENLIGHTENMENT
(Steven Van Zandt)

I stumbled blindly through the storm
Rituals, myths and dreams helped me carry on
The last words the warrior priest confessed,
"Faith has its usefulness"

She offered shelter, wine and bread
"I seek the truth", I said
She smiled, "You first must die before rebirth"
She buried my sword in Mother Earth

"The fast is over. Tonight we share the feast"
She whispered, "Do you hear that sound. By passion the world is bound
And by passion it is released

Hunting the night for new flesh
While wisdom dwells in loneliness
You hold the key to the gates of redemption
Your demons await your attention

Those who resist the healing fire
Will drown in the ocean of desire
The adventure that you're ready for's the one you get
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust
The familiar is the death of lust
You can't fill your glass if it hasn't been emptied yet"

She said, "It's the journey not the destination
It's the journey not the destination"
I didn't understand, I was just a young man
She said, "It's the journey not the destination"

I seek the golden fleece, the Holy Grail
I wait no more for an excuse to fail
The path to compassion leads inside
I pray to find the wisdom to serve
Until the end of time

LET'S BE FRIENDS
Bruce Springsteen

I been watchin' you a long time
Trying to figure out where and when
We been moving down that same line
The time is now maybe we could get skin to skin

Don't know when this chance might come again
Good times got a way of comin' to an end
Don't know when this chance might come again
Good times got a way of slippin' a-way
Let's be friends, baby let's be friends

I know we're different you and me
Get a different way of walkin'
The time has come te let the past be history
Yeah, if we could just start talkin'

Don't know when this chance might come again
Good times got a way of comin' to an end
Don't know when this chance might come again
Good times got a way of slippin' a-way
Let's be friends, baby let's be friends

Do, do do doo do do do doo...

There's a lot of talk going `round now
Let'em talk you know you're the only one
There's a lot of walls need tearing down
Together we could take them down one by one

A Place For Me

There is a special place in life,
That needs my humble skill,
A certain job I'm meant to do,
Which no one else can fulfill.
The time will be demanding,
And the pay is not too good
And yet I wouldn't change it
for a moment -- even if I could
There is a special place in life,
A goal I must attain,
A dream that I must follow,
Because I won't be back again.
There is a mark that I must leave,
However small it seems to be,
A legacy of love for those
Who follow after me
There is a special place in life,
That only I may share,
A simple path that calls my name,
Awaiting me somewhere.
There is a hand that I must hold,
A word that I must say,
A smile that I must give
For there are tears to blow away.
There is a special place in life
that I was meant to fill.
A sunny spot where flowers grow,
upon a windy hill.
There's always a tomorrow and the
best is yet to be,
And somewhere in this world,
I know there is a place for me.

ONE LOVE
Bruce Springsteen

One girl, one love
One dream in our hearts
Two hearts as one
One hope, never to be torn apart

Yeah, come on baby, rock me the way I love
Shake me darlin', shake me, don't let me go
You're the one, yeah, you're the one for me

One dream, one dream
Is all, is all I need
One reason to believe
In you, I've found the thing I need

Yeah, come on baby, rock me the way I love
Shake me darlin', come on, don't let me go
You're the one, yeah, you're the one for me

Once I was alone
So alone, so all alone
Then you came along
With a love you said I could call home

Yeah, come on baby, rock me the way I love
Shake me darlin', come on, don't let me go
You're the one, yeah, you're the one for me

Come on baby, rock me all night long
I been searchin' for you for so long
You're the one, yeah, you're the one for me

The woodcarver has a vision. He determines what kind of wood it would take to accomplish his goal, along with other factors such as time, tools, and level of interest committed to making the vision a reality. He examines the selection of wood available, checking the history of the wood- has it been processed or seasoned? Is it damaged from prior use, and if so, can that be repaired? Is the piece strong enough to last once it is put to use? He looks at the grain, and imagines how it will look as a finished product. He fingers the knots carefully, determining if he will work around those or remove them, and whether it is worth the time he puts into it. Some areas will need more stripping, polishing, a steady hand carving to bring out the beauty, while other areas are fine as they are. Sometimes, he finds a piece of wood that has such personality that it doesn't fit his original vision, but he holds onto it just the same to see if he can find a use for it.

As he works with the wood, sometimes the vision might alter slightly as he sees a change in the grain that was unexpected, or work to improve small flaws that he detects through his familiar handling of the wood. Some areas, he will strip quickly to get to remove the layers he does not want, yet in others, he knows that pressing too hard might break the wood in half. He works with what he has, patient but dedicated to his vision- the gradual shaping and polishing bringing just as much pleasure as the finished product will.
