I'm not complaining, honestly. Just giving my thoughts. I did use the volunteer editor section as recommended.

Fistly I would like to thank a few of those wonderful editors that had replied back to tell me if they were wiling or not to help me edit my story and I found a couple that were really nice.

What I don't understand is why some editors had their profile updated but yet when you contact them, they did not reply at all? And I'm talking about those that just recently updated their profiles. I thought it was at least a courtesy to drop back a line and said 'sorry unable to comply' I think that would be quite sufficient enough instead of me waiting for a week, get no reply and start looking for another and the same thing happen. The thing just drag on and on.

I mean if you are really that busy to edit for someone why in the first place do volunteer and in? I feel kinda funny it was as if I am trying my luck at 'Lotto' to see if I score anything.

Anyway once again I like to thank those that have replied to me and take their time out to help me with my story. You know who you are but I'm not sure if you like your names to be mention here so I'll just keep you guys anonymous.

Thank you

Need 102, I just found that out. But press on, you'll get them.

I'm not clear on editorial propriety myself, but I would only wait 48 hours on weekdays and over a weekend till Monday night if I got no response to move on to my next selection, honestly.

Most people check their email daily, I only put the caveat in about weekends, because they might be out of town or some such. IMHO, no response after 48 hours and they're not interested. If they come back later with a reason, and I've not moved on, well, we'll chat, I suppose. But they probably won't be annoyed if you have moved on, either, knowing they didn't respond for 3+days.

One point to consider, is that most people check their MAIN e-mail account every fifteen or twenty minutes when they're online, but most of the contact addreses for volunteer editors are not their main e-mail acounts and I suspect that manyof them are like me and forget when they lat checked their secondary or anonymous e-mail accounts for a week or ten days at a time.

That's not to say that anyone should wait a week to ten days for a response from a VE, but it's one possible reason for recently updated editors not answering their mail promptly.

I haven't used the VEs for a couple of years now, but the two times I did, I sent requests to ten editors at a time hoping for five decent edits to compare for the maximum possible error correction.

I did find five good editors and every one of them found different problems and only three duplicated something another editor found. I highly recommend second, third and fourth opinions rather than relying on a single editor.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with the VE you've contacted and not getting replies in timely manner. You know that you can complain to Lit's Admin about things like that do you? I mean, I understand a day or two of waiting before getting an answer but more than that isn't normal and I don't care if it's their MAIN email account or not (Sorry WH), I would complain to Laurel that the editor's are not responding to your request for help and ask if she can do something about making sure that they're still interested in editing.

Unfortunately you're not the first one who complains about something like that...plenty of people have the same complaint and either here, PMs or email I tell them the same thing....(shameless plug)...maybe you should take a look at the list of Alternate editors I'Ve started here. Those on that list are good, and they are willing to edit and they'll reply to you in a timely manner.

Actually the same thing happened to me before I posted here that I was looking for an editor.

I wrote to an alternate and one regular volunteer editor and still had no reply after a couple of weeks.

Not everyone wants to edit my genre.

Nothing to be sorry about, really. When the volunteer Editor program was first esatblishe, the goal was to have editors reply in no less than 72 hours, but there has been the problem of editors not responding since day one.

The question of main e-mail vs anonymous e-mail has been big part of the problem as is the tendency to put updating their information in a timely manner on a low priority -- especially if it's a temporary update like "I'm going to be out of town for the holidays" when there is so much else going on at the time thy should be updating their information.

I'm NOT trying to make excuses for rude and uncooperative volunteers, just pointing ut some of the realities that affect how promptly an editor responds and pointing out that for the most part, "writers are getting what they pay for."

A good editor or two is a prize beyond value, but like finding a prince, you just have to deal with a lot of toads along the way to finding one.
