For the past several months I have been getting called upon every time a patient needs a Texas Catheter put in place. I've been having to do this even for the experienced R.N.'s and C.N.A.'s. It's been getting a bit old to say the least.

Because of this last week I told my boss that I wanted to hold an In-Servie Class so everyone could learn how to put one in place correctly. Surprisingly she agreed and it was scheduled for today. It was a mandatory In-Service for my unit and R.N.'s and C.N.A.'s were asked to come from other units to see it as well.

I chose an appropriate patient for the In-Service. ONe who was Comatose and had retraction. We even cleared it with the patients family so everything was legal.

At the appointed time I had more than a couple of people milling around outside the room waiting for the In-Service. I had everything ready in the room and had them all come in.

I started out by showing them how to access the penis of a male patient with retraction. I followed this by showing them the proper way to cleanse the penis. (Including how to properly cleanse an un circumsised penis.) This segued into how to properly apply a Texas (Condom) Catheter. As I finished up I told the gathered R.N.'s and C.N.A.'s that they knew how to put a Texas (Condom) Catheter on a patient. I also made the comment that I found it disturbing that so many young women who were medical profesionals didn't know how to put a Condom on a male.

My boss didn't like that comment. She found it insulting.

Oh well.

Hey, I never saw one until I was 42 and I didn't know how to put it on, either.
